Tractrix Horns and Compression Drivers: The Physics Behind a Century-Old Design That Still Wins

How a 1920s acoustic curve still shapes the way high-end loudspeakers turn power into sound

Klipsch Limited Edition 80th Anniversary Klipschorn

Point a normal dome or cone tweeter at a room and most of its output never reaches the listener in a useful form. A small diaphragm radiating into open air has to fight a sudden, dramatic change in acoustic impedance – the resistance the air puts up against being pushed – and a lot of the driver’s energy is wasted overcoming that mismatch instead of turning into clean, audible sound. It is the same problem a swimmer has pushing water compared to a rower with an oar: without something to transform the effort into useful motion, most of the energy just churns in place. For loudspeaker designers, the century-old answer to that mismatch is the horn, and one particular horn shape – the Tractrix horn – has proven so effective at the job that it still shows up in brand-new high-end products today.

A Problem From the 1920s, Solved With a Curve

Horn loudspeakers predate the tweeter as most listeners know it. In the early days of electrical sound reproduction, drivers were weak and amplifiers weaker, so engineers needed every possible trick to turn a small amount of electrical power into a loud, clear acoustic result. A horn does this by gradually widening the path sound travels through, so the abrupt jump in impedance between the driver’s diaphragm and the open room is smoothed out over a controlled distance instead of happening all at once. The Tractrix profile, named after the mathematical “tractrix” curve first described in the 17th century, was adapted for horn design in the 1920s by the German acoustics researcher Paul G.A.H. Voigt, who showed that this specific curve minimizes distortion and reflections inside the horn’s throat better than a simple straight-sided or exponential horn. The American engineer Paul W. Klipsch later built an entire company philosophy around horn-loaded compression drivers, and Klipsch remains the brand most associated with the Tractrix horn loudspeaker today, using it across product lines from affordable bookshelf speakers to six-figure Heritage flagships.

The Klipschorn, Klipsch’s flagship, has used horn-loaded drivers since the 1940s.

What the Tractrix Horn Loudspeaker Actually Does

A compression driver paired with a Tractrix horn works because the horn acts as an acoustic transformer. The driver’s small diaphragm moves against a tiny, high-pressure chamber at the throat of the horn, and as the horn’s mouth widens along the Tractrix curve, that concentrated pressure is converted into a much larger volume of moving air at the horn’s mouth – without the reflections and cancellations that a poorly shaped horn would introduce. The practical result is sensitivity: a horn-loaded compression driver can produce dramatically more output for a given amount of amplifier power than a direct-radiating dome tweeter, which is why horn speakers have a reputation for sounding effortless and dynamic even on modest amplification. The Tractrix shape also controls dispersion tightly and predictably, throwing sound forward into the room rather than spraying it in all directions, which is part of why horn-loaded designs can sound so direct and immediate on transients like a snare hit or a plucked string.

Even a compact bookshelf model like the Klipsch Rebellion uses a Tractrix horn tweeter above its woofer.

From the Klipschorn to Today’s Bookshelf Speakers

Klipsch’s Heritage line, led by the Klipschorn, uses full horn loading on both the midrange and tweeter, a design so effective at converting amplifier power into room-filling sound that the original Klipschorn concept has barely changed since Paul W. Klipsch patented it in 1946. But the Tractrix horn loudspeaker principle scales down just as well as it scales up: Klipsch’s more affordable Reference and Reference Premiere ranges use a smaller Tractrix horn tweeter mounted above a conventional cone woofer, giving a two-way bookshelf speaker some of the same effortless top-end dynamics as the flagship, at a fraction of the price and size. That is the same horn-loaded tweeter approach found on the compact Klipsch Rebellion, the studio-leaning Klipsch RP-500PM powered monitor, and the flagship Klipschorn AK7, three very different products united by the same Tractrix horn loudspeaker curve doing the same job at the throat of the horn.

Why the Tractrix Horn Loudspeaker Still Wins in 2026

Modern horn-loaded designs have moved a long way past their 1940s origins – today’s Tractrix horns are computer-modelled for even smoother impedance transitions, paired with lighter, more linear compression driver diaphragms, and manufactured with CNC precision that a 1940s workshop could never have achieved. What has not changed is the underlying physics: a well-shaped horn still turns amplifier watts into room-filling sound more efficiently than a direct-radiating driver ever will, and it still gives designers precise control over where that sound goes in a room. In an era where efficiency, dynamics and a sense of scale are prized as much as ever, that is exactly why a nearly century-old curve keeps finding its way into brand-new high-end loudspeakers – from six-figure Heritage flagships all the way down to a modest bookshelf pair. Klipsch outlines its own take on the technology at klipsch.com/our-technology.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
