Sony has added a new colour to its compact Sony ULT FIELD 1 portable speaker. The new Smoke Blue finish joins the existing black, off-white, forest gray and orange versions, and according to Sony it is inspired by nature and designed to fit almost any setting.
Part of the ULT POWER SOUND range
The Sony ULT FIELD 1 belongs to the ULT POWER SOUND series, which Sony designed for listeners who like powerful sound with deep bass. A single press on the ULT button adds an extra bass boost. Inside, a woofer of about 83 x 42 mm works together with a tweeter of around 16 mm.
The speaker connects over Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC and AAC, and two units can be combined as a stereo pair. Settings are handled in the Sony Music Center app, and a built-in microphone with echo cancellation allows hands-free calls.
Built for outdoor use
With a battery life of up to 12 hours and an adjustable carrying strap, the Sony ULT FIELD 1 is designed to go wherever you go. Sony measured that battery figure with ULT POWER SOUND switched on and the volume at level 25, so real-world results depend on volume and conditions.
The speaker is rated IP67, which means it is dust-tight and survives immersion in water up to 1 metre deep for 30 minutes when the cover is closed. It is also shock-resistant: Sony says it passed a drop test from 1.22 metres according to MIL-STD 810H. It can stand upright or lie flat, so it also fits on a narrow shelf or a bike bag.
Compact and light
At about 206 x 77 x 76 mm and 650 g, the speaker is small enough for a backpack. It charges over USB-C. For listeners who want even more bass for a party at home, Sony also offers larger models in the same range, such as the Sony ULT TOWER speakers.
Who is it for?
With its rugged build and simple controls, the speaker is aimed at listeners who want a speaker for the beach, the park or the garden rather than a high-end system for the living room. The Smoke Blue finish does not change the hardware, but it gives buyers a more subdued alternative to the bright orange and the classic black. For anyone looking for a gift that can take a beating, the extra colour choice is welcome.
Pricing and availability
Sony has not announced a separate European price for the Smoke Blue version. The Sony ULT FIELD 1 launched in Europe at around €140, and in the United States the Smoke Blue model is listed at $139.99, the same as the other colours. More information is available on the Sony website.
