Sony has introduced the Sony MDR-3R, a wired headphone with a USB-C connection that is inspired by the very first Walkman headphone, the MDR-3 from 1979. Alongside the standard version, Sony is also launching a special Stranger Things Edition with an eighties design, created together with the popular Netflix series.
Back to 1979
When Sony introduced the Walkman TPS-L2 in 1979, it came with a small, light headphone: the MDR-3. Together they created a new way of listening to music, on the move and in complete freedom. Almost half a century later, the ways we listen have become far more varied, but according to Sony the wired headphone is being rediscovered for its simplicity: no charging, no pairing.
The Sony MDR-3R follows the same idea as the original. It keeps the recognisable design of the MDR-3, including the iconic blue and orange ear pads that are both supplied in the box, so you can change the look to suit your mood. Even the packaging and the manual are inspired by the original model. Fans of the brand’s portable heritage may also want to read our article on the Sony NW-WM1ZM3 and NW-WM1AM3 Walkman.

USB-C instead of a 3.5 mm plug
The biggest change compared with the original is the connection. The Sony MDR-3R plugs directly into compatible devices such as smartphones via USB-C, provided they support USB Audio Class 1.0. No charging, pairing or firmware updates are needed: plug it in and listen to music or video straight away. A built-in microphone allows calls, and buttons on the cable control playback.
Sony notes that use with a Walkman is not recommended, and that depending on the connected device or software some functions may need extra settings. That is the trade-off of a USB-C headphone compared with a classic analogue plug.

The same 23 mm drivers
Sony developed the Sony MDR-3R from the original design specifications and uses the same 23 mm drivers as the MDR-3. As a result, the sound stays close to the original, with subtle adjustments to match today’s listening preferences. Sony promises its familiar balanced sound, with natural voices. Like the MDR-3, the new model has a light, open design that stays comfortable during long listening sessions.
Sony also paid attention to the environment: about 25% of the plastic in the headphone housing is recycled, and the product packaging is plastic-free.
Stranger Things Edition
The Sony MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition brings the music culture of the Walkman era together with the world of the Netflix series. It is inspired by the headphone that the character Max wears and by the mysterious Upside Down, in a red and black finish. Exclusive details such as an engraved Stranger Things logo and specially designed packaging complete the edition.

Who is it for?
The Sony MDR-3R is not a high-end headphone, and Sony does not pretend it is. It is a charming, affordable piece of audio history for anyone who grew up with a Walkman, and a simple, light alternative to wireless earbuds for a new generation. At this price, it also makes a fun gift for fans of Stranger Things.
Pricing and availability
The Sony MDR-3R is available from November 2026 at a suggested retail price of €59. The Stranger Things Edition costs €69. More information is available on the Sony website.
