Sony has introduced the ECM-W5, a new wireless microphone system built for creators who shoot on Sony cameras but also need a mic that works just as well with a smartphone or a laptop. The Sony ECM-W5 pairs two compact transmitters with a receiver that clips directly onto a camera’s Multi Interface Shoe, and the whole kit is designed to go from the charging case to a rolling shoot in seconds.
Hi-Res audio and worry-free 32-bit float recording
The headline feature of the Sony ECM-W5 is its recording quality: the system captures High-Resolution Audio at up to 96 kHz/24-bit, and it can also record in 48 kHz/32-bit float. That float format is what makes the ECM-W5 genuinely forgiving on set, because gain no longer has to be set perfectly in advance. A quiet aside and a sudden shout can both be recovered cleanly in post, without the clipping or buried-in-noise problems that plague fixed-gain wireless systems. On a compatible Sony camera, that 32-bit float audio is recorded wirelessly and directly into the video file itself, so there is no separate audio file to sync or manage afterwards.
Built-in backup recording and long-range stability
Each transmitter also records a backup copy onto its own built-in memory, so a dropped wireless link never means lost audio. Sony rates the connection as stable up to 500 metres in line of sight, which gives plenty of headroom for run-and-gun interviews, documentary work or event coverage where the subject wanders further than expected. The receiver also accepts a standard 3.5mm input, so the ECM-W5 can double as a receiver for a lavalier or shotgun mic when the situation calls for it, and it connects directly to smartphones and PCs for creators who are not shooting on a Sony camera at all.
A kit built for fast, simple setup
The ECM-W5 arrives as a complete, all-in-one package: two microphone transmitters, one receiver, a charging case and the accessories needed to get started, including furry windscreens for outdoor use. Opening the case automatically wakes the receiver; pulling the transmitters out powers them on as well, which keeps the time between unpacking and recording to a minimum. It is a practical, considered design that should appeal as much to solo creators as to small video teams who need a dependable wireless mic without a steep learning curve.
Pricing and availability
The Sony ECM-W5 is available to pre-order now at $399.99, with estimated delivery from mid-to-late November 2026 in the US market; European availability and local pricing follow via Sony’s regional sites.
