Nothing Ear (3a) is available in black, white, yellow and a new pink colourway.

Nothing has announced the Nothing Ear (3a), the next generation of its best-selling (a)-series earbuds. Building on the playful design language the brand introduced for a generation that uses technology to express its personality, the Nothing Ear (3a) arrives with a bolder colour palette — a striking new pink alongside black, white and a refreshed yellow — and a set of recording features aimed at everyday listening moments.

Nothing Ear (3a) design: bold colours, playful details

The Ear (3a) continues Nothing’s (a)-series identity, built around music and self-expression. The charging case has been redesigned with inspiration from pill strips and blister packaging, resulting in a rounder, more playful shape. The earbuds keep Nothing’s signature transparent housing but add refined details and improved ergonomics, along with a new XS ear-tip size for a better fit across a wider range of users. The case also gets an updated 1×3 LED status indicator showing battery level, charging status and pairing information at a glance.

Capture what you hear with Audio Snapshot

A standout feature of the Ear (3a) is Audio Snapshot, enabled by 32MB of built-in flash storage. Pressing both earbuds together captures the audio just before and after the trigger moment, letting users save a lecture, a voice note or any sound they want to keep. Recordings sync automatically to the Nothing X app, where they can be played back, edited, shared and transcribed — including turning key passages into shareable quote cards.

Call recording that remembers everything

The Ear (3a) can also record phone calls and meetings directly through the earbuds, without needing a phone in hand, for up to two hours. Recordings sync to the Nothing X app automatically, and all participants receive a privacy notification once a recording starts.

Hi-Res Audio and Wideband ANC

A new 12mm dynamic driver delivers deeper bass and more detail, with bass frequencies up to 5dB stronger than the previous generation, while a lightweight, aviation-inspired PMI diaphragm handles clear, detailed highs. The Ear (3a) is Hi-Res Audio Wireless certified and supports LDAC for high-quality transmission up to 24-bit/96kHz, with an 8-band Advanced EQ and shareable sound profiles in the app. Static Spatial Audio widens traditional stereo playback for a fuller soundstage across music, film and live recordings.

On the noise cancellation side, Wideband Active Noise Cancellation reaches up to 45dB, with acoustic mesh and ANC algorithm improvements focused on the 400Hz–2000Hz range where much ambient noise sits — a 17.1% improvement in overall coverage over the previous generation. Transparency mode remains available for situations where ambient awareness matters, and three microphones per earbud work with an AI noise-reduction system to keep voices clear in busy environments. Listeners looking for a similarly compact, open-ear alternative may also want to read our review of the Sennheiser Accentum Clip open-ear earbuds.

Battery life and the Nothing X app

The Ear (3a) offers up to 42 hours of playback with the charging case, and up to 10 hours on the earbuds alone with ANC off (25 hours total with ANC on). A five-minute fast charge adds roughly one hour of playback. The Nothing X app rounds out the package with EQ customisation, sound-profile sharing, firmware updates and Find My Earbuds, plus quick access to ChatGPT and Essential News when paired with Nothing smartphones.

Pricing and availability

The Nothing Ear (3a) is available now via nothing.tech, priced at €99.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
