ATC, renowned for its meticulous engineering and iconic designs, has announced the launch of its latest masterpiece the EL50 Anniversary Loudspeaker. This active 3-way tower represents the pinnacle of ATC’s decades-long pursuit of sonic excellence, blending tradition with cutting-edge technology to satisfy audiophiles and music enthusiasts alike.
A Heritage of Excellence and Evolution
The EL50 draws inspiration from ATC’s storied history, embodying the winning design blueprint that has defined the brand for years. It is the latest evolution of the legendary ATC 50 loudspeaker, a model that has set standards since its inception. The EL50’s active tri-amp technology first made its debut with the SCM70 in the 1990s and was refined through subsequent models like the SCM50 Anniversary in 2004 and the SE Series in 2014. Its aesthetic cues also pay homage to the EL150, introduced in 2006 with its elliptical enclosure designed by Billy Woodman, featuring elegant leather detailing and premium hand-selected veneers.
Innovative Discrete Active Amplification
At the heart of the EL50 lies a groundbreaking ‘Amp-Pack’ a proprietary, discrete 3-channel active amplification system. This advanced module boasts balanced inputs, user controls, active crossovers, and three dedicated power amps delivering 200W, 100W, and 50W respectively, tailored to the bass, midrange, and high frequencies. The design incorporates discrete gain blocks within the level stages and fourth-order active crossovers, significantly lowering the noise floor and minimizing distortion for pristine sound clarity.
The power supply has also been re-engineered with individual toroidal transformers for each channel, enhancing headroom and reducing intermodulation distortion. This ensures the EL50 performs flawlessly under demanding listening conditions, delivering a transparent and dynamic audio experience.
Refined Cabinetry and Premium Finishes
Building upon the legacy of craftsmanship, ATC has enhanced the EL50’s enclosure with advanced manufacturing techniques that increase stiffness and internal damping. These improvements reduce cabinet-induced coloration, particularly in the upper bass and midrange frequencies. The bass driver is mounted into a precision-machined aluminum ring bolted directly into the cabinet face, reinforcing structural integrity.
A curved cabinet face and edges facilitate smooth driver integration, minimizing diffraction and ensuring consistent frequency response both on and off-axis. The speaker’s aesthetic is equally compelling: hand-selected European walnut veneers adorn the curved surfaces, complemented by ebony inlays on the rear panel and a high-gloss polyester lacquer finish. Upholstered Napa leather panels around the mid and high-frequency drivers add tactile luxury and visual contrast, seamlessly blending form and function.
Precision-Engineered Drive Units for Sonic Purity
ATC’s commitment to in-house manufacturing excellence manifests in the drive units of the EL50. The tweeter, the SH25-76S ‘S-Spec’, features a powerful neodymium motor, dual suspension, and a coated fabric dome, delivering smooth, extended high frequencies with impeccable off-axis response.
For midrange performance, the SM75-150S ‘Superdome’ driver covers from 380Hz to 3.5kHz. Its high-power magnet system and large voice coil enable it to resolve intricate musical details while effortlessly handling dynamic peaks, ensuring lifelike realism across a wide spectrum.
Completing the system, the SB75-234SL bass driver employs ATC’s Super Linear motor technology to minimize third harmonic distortion, resulting in clearer bass and seamless integration with the midrange. Its optimized spider and surround design facilitate large excursions, producing controlled, deep lows without sacrificing precision.
