Audio-Technica has introduced the Audio-Technica ATH-AWX7000, its new flagship closed-back headphones and the culmination of more than 60 years of acoustic engineering paired with over three decades of wood headphone craftsmanship. Designed and manufactured entirely at Audio-Technica’s Naruse Factory in Japan, the Audio-Technica ATH-AWX7000 joins the open-back ATH-ADX7000 at the top of the company’s headphone range, but takes a markedly different acoustic approach.
True Closed-back Acoustic design
The Audio-Technica ATH-AWX7000 headphones mark the first model built around Audio-Technica’s new True Closed-back Acoustic (TCbA) design, engineered to harness the air pressure generated inside sealed earcups. The result is meant to combine the powerful low-frequency energy and wide dynamic range typical of closed-back headphones with the transparency across mid and high frequencies usually associated with open-back designs.
Driving that performance are two new technologies working in tandem. The Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm (HMD) bonds thin films of different materials into a single diaphragm for faster transient response, while High-Concentricity X Dynamic Transducer (HXDT) manufacturing aligns the baffle, magnet, voice coil and diaphragm to tolerances ten times tighter than conventional assembly. A non-oriented electrical steel sheet magnetic circuit rounds out the driver system, aimed at minimising energy loss and improving clarity.

Kiso cypress and Echizen lacquer, applied by hand
Each earcup housing is carved from Kiso cypress, a slow-growing Japanese wood that can take up to 300 years to mature; Audio-Technica has secured a special allocation from strictly managed state-owned forests for the build. Every housing is then finished by hand with Echizen lacquer, a craft tradition stretching back more than 1,500 years, applied by brush so that small variations in the hand-finished surface give each pair its own character over time.
Elsewhere, soft leather earpads provide the seal, while precision-machined aluminium sliders are mounted to a lightweight magnesium frame. The frame, arms and sliders are finished in a deep navy blue inspired by kachi-iro, traditionally regarded in Japan as the lucky colour of samurai, and a newly designed headband adds comfort for longer sessions.

The Audio-Technica ATH-AWX7000 will make its public debut at the Paris Audio Video Show on 23 October 2026, positioning it as the brand’s showcase piece for the closed-back segment heading into 2027.

Pricing and availability
The Audio-Technica ATH-AWX7000 is priced at €3,799 and comes supplied with a 2.5m balanced cable terminated in Neutrik XLR connectors, a 3.0m unbalanced cable with a 6.3mm stereo plug, both using A2DC connectors, plus a hard carrying case. Full regional availability will follow the Paris Audio Video Show debut; interested buyers can register interest via Audio-Technica’s own product page, which lists the headphones for inquiry ahead of wider retail rollout.
