Sony has just announced the RX1R III, the highly anticipated third generation of its iconic RX1R series, designed for professional travel and street photographers seeking unparalleled portability without compromising on image quality. This compact full-frame camera combines cutting-edge technology with a sleek, lightweight design, making it a standout addition to Sony’s lineup. Available from July 2025 for approximately €4,900, the RX1R III is poised to redefine high-end compact photography.

  • Uncompromising Image Quality
  • AI-Powered Precision
  • Sleek Design and Robust Build
  • Commitment to Sustainability and Accessibility
  • Optional Accessories
  • Final Thoughts

Uncompromising Image Quality

At the heart of the RX1R III lies a 61-megapixel 35mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor paired with Sony’s latest BIONZ XR image processor. This powerful combination delivers exceptional resolution, low noise, and a wide dynamic range, producing vibrant, richly detailed images with remarkable sharpness and clarity. The sensor features an anti-reflection (AR) coating, and the optical low-pass filter has been omitted to maximize image quality, catering to photographers who demand the highest standards.

The camera retains the iconic ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens, renowned for its nostalgic visual tone and precision. Sony has meticulously optimized the lens and sensor alignment to ensure superior optical performance despite the camera’s compact form. For creators seeking versatility, the innovative Step Crop Shooting feature allows seamless switching between 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm focal lengths via dedicated controls, with the option to reselect focal lengths during RAW post-processing. Additionally, the lens’s macro ring enables close-up shooting at a minimum distance of 20cm, offering a maximum magnification of 0.26x.

AI-Powered Precision

The RX1R III incorporates Sony’s latest AI chip, a hallmark of its Alpha series, enabling advanced subject recognition and tracking. The AI can accurately detect and follow the shape, movement, and eye position of subjects, including humans, even when faces are obscured. Covering approximately 78% of the sensor area, the camera boasts 693 phase-detection autofocus points for fast, precise focusing in both stills and video. This makes the RX1R III a versatile tool for capturing dynamic scenes with ease.

For creative expression, the camera introduces twelve Creative Looks, including two new presets: FL2 for a nostalgic, subdued aesthetic and FL3 for vibrant, lively imagery. These settings allow photographers to fine-tune hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, and sharpness for both photos and videos, ensuring a personalized touch to every shot.

Sleek Design and Robust Build

Crafted from a lightweight magnesium alloy, the RX1R III strikes a perfect balance between form and function. Its streamlined design integrates dials and a Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe into the body, while a newly designed rubber-textured grip ensures comfort during extended use. The camera features a high-resolution XGA OLED electronic viewfinder with approximately 2.36 million dots and a 0.70x magnification for a clear, immersive shooting experience.

The RX1R III is powered by an NP-FW50 battery, capable of capturing up to 300 shots per charge. A USB Type-C port supports fast charging and compatibility with USB Power Delivery devices, allowing for extended shooting sessions with external power sources like portable batteries.

Commitment to Sustainability and Accessibility

Sony aligns the RX1R III with its “Road to Zero” environmental goal, aiming for a zero ecological footprint by 2050. The camera’s production facilities run entirely on renewable electricity, and its packaging uses Sony’s eco-friendly Original Blended Material, eliminating plastic. Accessibility features, including a screen reader and magnification options, ensure the camera is inclusive for visually impaired users.

Optional Accessories

The RX1R III is complemented by a range of premium accessories, available from September 2025:

  • TG-2 Thumb Grip (€280): Enhances one-handed operation with a premium lacquered finish.

  • LCS-RXL Body Case (€180): Protects against scratches and dust while maintaining access to ports and controls.

  • LHP-1 Lens Hood (€200): A durable aluminum hood with a bayonet mount to shield the lens from bumps and debris.

Final Thoughts

The Sony RX1R III is a triumph of engineering, blending a high-resolution full-frame sensor, AI-driven performance, and a compact, eco-conscious design. Tailored for photographers who value discretion and portability without sacrificing quality, this camera is set to become a favorite among professionals and enthusiasts alike. Mark your calendars for July 2025, when the RX1R III hits the market, ready to capture the world in stunning detail.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
