Earbud cases have always been a bit of an afterthought: a plastic box that charges your buds and not much else. JBL has spent the last four years arguing otherwise, and with the new JBL Live 4 series, its JBL Smart Charging Case takes its biggest step yet. The case now carries a larger touchscreen and a completely redesigned interface, letting you control your earbuds without ever pulling out your phone.
A bigger screen, a smarter JBL Smart Charging Case interface
The new JBL Smart Charging Case is the first to run JBL Smart OS 3.0, a rebuilt software experience with more controls, more personalization, and a friendlier layout. Swipe up, down or side to side on the case to check notifications, skip a track, or jump straight to your EQ settings. Frequently used features can be pinned to the home screen, so switching between ANC and Ambient Aware, or silencing a call, takes a single tap.

Personalization goes further than past generations too. Owners can swap in background themes or upload their own photo to the case screen, a small touch that makes the accessory feel less like a charging box and more like a companion device. According to Carsten Olesen, President of Consumer Audio at HARMAN, the goal since introducing the Smart Charging Case four years ago has been to keep adding capability without adding friction, and the Live 4’s larger screen and refined interface are presented as the next step in that effort. Full specifications and ordering details are available on jbl.com.
Built around the JBL Live 4 earbuds
The case ships with the JBL Live 4 family, available in three fits: Live Buds 4 (in-ear with silicone tips), Live Beam 4 (in-ear, stem design with ear tips for a sealed fit), and Live Flex 4 (a stem design that rests in the outer ear for a looser, more relaxed fit). All three share new high-fidelity drivers tuned for deeper bass and clearer detail, plus enhanced active noise cancellation designed to filter out more of the outside world during music, podcasts and calls.

Calls get their own upgrade through 6-Mic Perfect Call 2.0, combined with a wind-proof design and an AI-trained algorithm tuned to strip out everyday background noise such as traffic, a running fan, or a slamming door. Battery life stands at up to 48 hours total, with roughly 12 hours from the earbuds themselves and the rest topped up by the case, ANC switched off. A 10-minute speed charge over USB-C adds another 4 hours of playback, and the case supports Qi wireless charging for topping up without a cable. It is the same emphasis on everyday convenience that has driven recent JBL launches, including the JBL Pulse 6 portable speaker.

Availability and pricing
JBL Live Beam 4 and Live Flex 4 arrive in Black, Blue, Green, Silver, Orange, Purple and Sand, while Live Buds 4 is offered in Black, Blue, Silver and Sand. All three models are priced at €199.99 and are available now through jbl.com.
Whether the touchscreen case turns out to be a genuine convenience or a feature most owners dip into once and forget depends on daily habits, but JBL is clearly betting that a smarter case, not just smarter earbuds, is where the next real upgrade in this category lives. For a company that introduced the original Smart Charging Case four years ago, the Live 4 generation reads as a statement that the case itself, not only the drivers inside the earbuds, is now considered core product territory rather than a simple accessory.
