Google has updated the Pixel Buds Pro 2 with a new set of software features and a new Olive colourway, alongside a smaller feature refresh for the more affordable Pixel Buds 2a. The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 update focuses on adaptive noise cancelling, hands-free control through Gemini, and deeper integration with the rest of the Pixel ecosystem, rather than any change to the earbuds’ hardware.
What’s new on the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2
The headline addition is Dynamic ANC, which continuously adjusts the active noise cancelling as the seal between earbud and ear canal shifts during use, aiming to keep noise cancellation consistent rather than letting it degrade when a bud sits slightly loose. Google is also adding Gemini audio control, so listeners can adjust settings by voice – Google’s own example has users simply saying ‘turn up the bass’ to Gemini rather than digging through a companion app.
Two further features lean on the wider Pixel hardware family. Pixel Watch sleep sync lets a paired Pixel Watch detect when the wearer falls asleep and automatically pause music, disable touch controls on the buds and silence notifications, so a podcast or playlist does not run all night. Live translate, meanwhile, gets an upgrade: a tap on the buds triggers a listening mode that understands more than 70 languages in near real time, and now works in both directions – the wearer can speak in their own language and have a connected Pixel phone play the translation back to whoever they are talking to.
A new Olive finish, plus updates for Pixel Buds 2a
Alongside the software update, Google is introducing a new Olive colourway for the Pixel Buds Pro 2, joining the existing Porcelain, Wintergreen and Hot Pink options. The Pixel Buds 2a, Google’s mid-range true wireless earbuds, receive a version of the same software update, extending several of the new controls beyond the flagship model without changing its lower price position in the lineup.
None of the updates require new hardware: existing Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a owners get the new features through a software update rather than having to buy a new pair, which is consistent with how Google has handled past Pixel Buds feature rollouts.
Pixel Buds sit at a more mainstream price point than most of the earbuds covered here, but the direction Google is taking with adaptive ANC is worth watching for the wider true wireless market: other recent releases, such as the Cambridge Melomania A100 True Wireless Earphones with ANC, show how quickly active noise cancelling has become a baseline expectation rather than a premium extra.

The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 in Olive is available to order now from the Google Store, priced at $229 (currently listed at a discounted $189 through August 23).
