Accuphase has introduced the Accuphase C-3900S, a refined flagship precision stereo preamplifier that succeeds the C-3900 and closes roughly five years of development on the platform. The C-3900S introduces Accuphase’s first Dual Balanced AAVA volume control, a resistor-free attenuation stage the brand says cuts noise by around 30 percent compared with its previous circuits.
The C-3900S builds on a design with real history behind it: the original C-3900 arrived in 2020 to mark Accuphase’s 50th anniversary as a company founded in 1972 (originally as Kensonic Laboratory, renamed Accuphase Laboratory a decade later), and the ‘S’ update is designed as a showcase of everything the company has learned about low-noise gain stages since then. Rather than treat the refresh as a styling exercise, Accuphase has kept the familiar champagne fascia and dual analogue meters largely unchanged and instead concentrated the update on what happens between the input jacks and the volume control – the part of a preamplifier’s circuit that does the most to shape the sound of everything connected to it.
Accuphase C-3900S: a resistor-free take on AAVA
Accuphase’s AAVA (Accuphase Analog Vari-gain Amplifier) system has always avoided resistor-based attenuation in favor of VI converter circuits that vary gain directly, and the Dual Balanced AAVA C-3900S pushes that approach further by running the whole stage in balanced form. Volume is set through a newly designed aluminum-block sensor with motor-driven remote control, paired with a discrete current-feedback input amplifier and Accuphase’s ANCC noise and distortion cancelling circuit. A five-stage loudness compensator and eight parallel output amplifier stages round out the signal path, while a separate parallel push-pull headphone amplifier and logic-controlled relay switching keep the front end isolated from downstream noise. Dual-mono build and connections
Behind the champagne-coloured front panel and solid wood cabinet, the C-3900S uses a genuine dual-mono power supply with separate toroidal transformers for the left and right channels, backed by twelve 10,000μF filter capacitors. Circuit boards are built from glass-cloth fluorocarbon-resin (FRP) material, and the whole 25kg chassis rests on cast-iron insulating feet. Connectivity is generous for a preamplifier in this class: seven line inputs and four balanced inputs, two line outputs and two balanced outputs, plus dedicated EXT PRE inputs, a recording loop, switchable overall gain, mono operation and a loudness function.
