The Davone Solo-R is the Danish brand’s 10-year-anniversary update to its distinctive teardrop-shaped floorstander, and it is more than a cosmetic refresh: the Solo-R borrows driver technology directly from Davone’s flagship Reference line. The result, according to Davone, is Reference-level resolution and imaging carried in the Solo’s own, unmistakable form.
Reference Technology, Familiar Shape
The Solo-R keeps the driver sizes and cabinet placement of the original Solo unchanged, but nearly everything about the drivers themselves has been reworked. The tweeter is now a 25mm variable-thickness aluminum-magnesium alloy dome with an ultrasonic first breakup mode, a fully saturated neodymium motor and a copper sleeve, borrowed directly from the Reference series for low mass and excellent transient response. The 4-inch midrange uses a new membrane that interweaves Kevlar and carbon fiber for low mass, rigidity and damping, paired with a Balanced Drive motor structure. The 8-inch woofer, a geometrically reinforced aluminum cone on a rigid die-cast chassis, is optimized for large excursions in the bass-reflex enclosure.
Controlled Directivity by Design
Davone built the Solo’s curved cabinet, driver placement and crossover around what it calls controlled directivity: keeping the loudspeaker’s off-axis response as smooth as possible so the sound reflected by walls, ceiling and floor stays close to the direct sound rather than distorting it. The Solo-R’s tall, slender, complex-curved cabinet also targets the roughly 150Hz internal standing waves common to tall box-type speakers, a design goal Davone says makes an immediate difference to bass clarity and focus. The result is a speaker Davone positions as equally at home in a dedicated listening room or a living room.
A Design Object That Happens to Play Music
Design has always been central to the Solo’s appeal: the cabinet is built from 10 layers of form-pressed beech wood veneer with internal stiffeners, finished in walnut over a distinctive oval floor stand, and hand-assembled at Davone’s own production facility in Denmark, where the company has built loudspeakers since 2007. Similar to how other boutique Danish and Nordic speaker brands treat cabinetwork as inseparable from sound quality, Davone frames the Solo-R’s sculptural shape as functional rather than decorative, a byproduct of the acoustic engineering rather than an afterthought.
