Few loudspeakers earn the right to be called simply “The” anything. Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy is one of them: an on-axis monitor turned two-box floorstander that ran through eight evolutions between 1986 and 2011 before Wilson Audio retired it. Thirteen years later, to mark the company’s 50th anniversary, Wilson Audio has brought it back – not as a nostalgia piece, but as a ground-up remastering built with everything the company has learned since.

The original WATT started life in 1985 as a practical solution to a specific problem: David Wilson, then a recording engineer, needed a compact, accurate on-site monitor he could carry to sessions. The Puppy bass module arrived in 1989 to give the WATT proper low-end extension, and the pairing – sold for decades under the Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy name – became one of the best-selling high-end loudspeakers ever made, at $10,000-plus price points, through Series 8 in 2011. Wilson Audio’s own framing is explicit about why it returned now rather than simply staying retired: this is a 50th-anniversary tribute built to honor what David Wilson would have made “if he had the resources then that Wilson Audio now possesses.”

Modern Materials, Same Two-Box Philosophy

The new Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy keeps the familiar layout – a compact monitor sitting atop a dedicated bass module – but nothing inside is unchanged. The enclosure now uses the most refined versions of Wilson’s proprietary composites: X-Material for internal bracing and the external enclosure, S-Material coupling the midrange to the WATT’s front baffle, and V-Material forming the vibration-sink interface where WATT meets Puppy. A new copper-wound version of Wilson’s AudioCapX-WA capacitor, first developed for the Sasha V, adds copper end-spray and gold leads aimed specifically at high-frequency resolution. What Hi-Fi’s Ketan Bharadia, hearing the new WATT/Puppy at Absolute Sounds’ London demo rooms, wrote that the pair “fully deserve their legendary status” – not a formal review score, but a notable first impression given how closely the model is tied to Wilson’s reputation.

A Handle With History

One detail carried through nearly unchanged is the rear handle – originally added so David Wilson could physically carry his monitor into recording sessions, and preserved on the new model as a functional nod to that origin, restyled for a more secure grip at any angle. It’s a small thing, but it is also one of the clearest through-lines connecting the current Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy to the “White Dwarf” prototype that started the whole line in 1985.

Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy pricing starts at approximately $38,500 per pair in standard WilsonGloss colors (Galaxy Gray, GT Silver, Quartz, Carbon or Grigio Medio), with premium, pearl and custom finishes priced higher. A limited 50th Anniversary medallion – color-matched to the chosen hardware finish, with a rare red version reserved for red paint options – is available exclusively through 2024 production.
