Topping has rebuilt one of its most popular headphone amplifiers from the inside out. The Topping A90 Discrete replaces the original A90’s integrated op-amp output stage with a fully discrete, transistor-based design, promising cleaner power delivery and even lower distortion for both headphones and preamp duty. At $599, it keeps the A90 lineage’s reputation for measured performance while adding a noticeably more muscular output.
A fully discrete take on the NFCA architecture
As its name suggests, the A90 Discrete rebuilds Topping’s NFCA (Nested Feedback Composite Amplifier) module using discrete components instead of op-amps. Four built-in NFCA-Discrete modules, each built from 39 transistors, form a fully balanced structure, paired with an optimised voltage-current hybrid feedback architecture and Topping’s UHGF (Ultra High Gain Feedback) technology. The result, according to Topping, is excellent DC and AC performance along with a stronger output stage that drives low-impedance headphones with more ease than the standard A90.

Power and precision for demanding headphones
The numbers back up the ambition: THD+N below 0.000055%, a dynamic range of 145dB and an output of 9800mW×2. Into 32-ohm headphones, the amp delivers 5800mW continuous and up to 6700mW peak, while 300-ohm headphones still get 950mW continuous (1000mW peak) — all while keeping distortion under 0.1% even at maximum output. A relay-based, precisely matched volume control and two selectable gain settings (low gain for sensitive IEMs, high gain for full-size over-ears) round out a feature set aimed at driving almost anything in a headphone collection without noise or strain.

Flexible connectivity and preamp duty
Connectivity covers 4-pin XLR and 4.4mm balanced outputs alongside a 6.35mm single-ended jack, and the amplifier can be expanded with Topping’s optional EXT90 module to add three more XLR outputs and an RCA output. Beyond headphone duty, the A90 Discrete also works as a full-performance preamplifier, with 20-ohm SE and 40-ohm balanced output impedance suited to a wide range of power amps; a GND/LIFT switch helps eliminate ground loop noise when the unit is combined with other sources. A full-featured remote control is included for use in either mode.

Pricing and availability
The Topping A90 Discrete is available now in silver or black finishes for $599 (around €599) through Topping’s official store and authorised retailers, slotting in above the standard A90 as the brand’s more muscular, fully discrete alternative.
