Built as an evolution of the original iCAN PHANTOM, the new model is aimed squarely at collectors who have ended up with a shelf of separate amplifiers — one for sensitive in-ear monitors, another for power-hungry planar magnetics, a third just to run electrostatic headsets. iFi’s pitch for the iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 is simple: one chassis capable of driving virtually any headphone type, with enough sonic adjustment on board that swapping amps between sessions becomes unnecessary.
Three Amplifiers in One iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5
At the core of the iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 sit two fully separate, switchable input stages: a discrete Class A solid-state stage and an all-valve Class A stage built around matched General Electric 5670 tubes. A third mode, Tube+, dials back loop gain and negative feedback and leans into the most sonically flattering harmonics for a warmer, more romantic character. Switching between Solid-State, Tube and Tube+ effectively turns the iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 into three distinctly voiced amplifiers inside a single chassis.
That flexibility carries through the rest of the toolset. A three-step XBass circuit lets listeners dial in low-frequency weight to taste, while a dedicated XSpace circuit — with separate matrices for headphone and speaker use — widens and opens up the soundstage. Gain has been expanded from 0dB/9dB/18dB on the original iCAN PHANTOM to 0dB, 12dB and 24dB on the 1.5, giving finer headroom control from sensitive IEMs through to demanding planar and electrostatic headsets. For electrostatic headphones specifically, iFi’s integrated iESL energiser delivers up to 640V without a separate outboard unit — a level of precision that used to require a dedicated second box.
Everyday Refinements on the iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5
Beyond the circuit-level changes, the iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 adds a set of refinements aimed at usability and long-term ownership. A new VU meter brings real-time visual level monitoring to the front panel, and the interface has been redesigned to match the iDSD PHANTOM for a consistent experience across iFi’s flagship range. IEMatch attenuation has been enhanced to up to 12dB single-ended and 24dB balanced for more precise matching across headphone types, the volume potentiometer now uses buffered pads for a smoother, more damped rotation, and an anti-fingerprint coating keeps the top glass and screen looking sharp. iFi has also expanded control through its Nexis app, adding a reset button, product renaming and real-time tube health monitoring alongside the existing remote-control functionality, diagnostics and over-the-air firmware updates.
The amplifier is built on the same True Differential Balanced, PureWavePRO circuit design and capacitive power supply that underpinned the original iFi Audio Phantom range, but the 1.5 revision is aimed squarely at long-term ownership rather than a ground-up redesign — which is really the point of the iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5: consolidate a shelf of amplifiers into one, rather than add another box to it.
