Sony FE 400mm 600mm GM OSS: A Powerful Featherweight Duo

Two new G Master primes bring Sony's lightest-in-class design to super-telephoto wildlife and sports photography.

Sony has expanded its G Master super-telephoto line-up with two new fixed-focal-length lenses for the full-frame Alpha E-mount system: the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS. The FE 400mm 600mm GM OSS duo is, according to Sony, the lightest pairing in its class, weighing approximately 994 grams and 995 grams respectively (excluding the tripod mount) — a meaningful reduction that changes what is realistically possible when shooting handheld at true super-telephoto reach.

Both lenses share a compact 108mm maximum diameter, with the 400mm measuring 242mm in length and the 600mm 263mm. Sony says the redesigned weight distribution moves the centre of gravity closer to the camera body, making it easier to track moving subjects, hold a composition steady, and pan smoothly — advantages aimed squarely at bird, wildlife and sports photographers who often shoot handheld for extended periods without a tripod or monopod.

FE 400mm 600mm GM OSS: Lightest in Their Class

The Sony FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS reaches subjects at extreme distance while weighing roughly 995 grams.

The FE 400mm 600mm GM OSS lenses are built to make super-telephoto photography less physically demanding without sacrificing G Master image quality. The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS lets photographers fill the frame with a subject while retaining enough of the surrounding scene for spatial context, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS uses its longer reach to bring distant subjects close with striking detail and visual impact — ideal for situations where getting physically closer simply isn’t an option.

G Master Resolution, Even at Extreme Reach

Both lenses use an optical design with three Super ED elements and one ED element to suppress the chromatic aberration that commonly affects super-telephoto focal lengths, delivering high resolution from the centre of the frame to the edges. Sony’s proprietary Nano AR Coating II reduces ghosting and flare, even when shooting into the light, while an 11-blade circular aperture and careful spherical-aberration control produce the smooth bokeh the G Master series is known for.

Autofocus is handled by two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors, fast and precise enough to track erratic subjects like birds in flight, and both lenses support burst shooting on the Alpha 9 III at up to 120 frames per second with AF/AE tracking. Built-in optical stabilisation, Active Mode stabilisation, coordinated in-body stabilisation, and breathing compensation round out the feature set for handheld stills and video alike.

Built for Handheld Wildlife and Sports Work

The lightweight design makes extended handheld shooting sessions more practical in the field.

Both lenses feature four customisable focus-hold buttons, a function ring, a focus range limiter, a full-time DMF switch, a focus mode switch and an image-stabilisation mode switch, giving photographers intuitive, on-the-fly control. Paired with Sony’s optional teleconverters, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS can reach 800mm and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS up to 1200mm. Both are built with dust and moisture resistance and a fluorine coating on the front element to repel contaminants, making them suitable for demanding outdoor conditions.

Pricing and availability

The Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS is priced at approximately €2,800, and the Sony FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS at approximately €3,900. Both lenses will be available from the end of September 2026, though pricing may vary by country and region.

Full technical background on the FE 400mm 600mm GM OSS series, along with sample content, is available via Sony’s Alpha Universe platform and www.sony.net. Readers who followed Sony’s recent EISA award wins for its imaging line-up will recognise the same G Master engineering philosophy at work here.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
