Schiit Audio has introduced the Schiit Freya 2, a fully balanced line preamplifier that lets listeners choose between pure tube, hybrid and all-solid-state operation without ever leaving the same chassis.
Priced at $999, the Schiit Freya 2 replaces the long-running Freya+ as the Minnesota brand’s flagship preamp and centers on what Schiit calls “Fusion Architecture”: a single no-feedback, Class-A differential topology that can be populated with either vacuum tubes or depletion-mode MOSFETs.
Five gain modes, one topology
The defining feature of the Schiit Freya 2 is flexibility. With four tubes installed, it runs as a pure Class-A triode differential preamp with no feedback. Pull the tubes and it switches seamlessly to an all-solid-state mode using the same circuit topology, just with MOSFETs standing in for the tube devices.
In between sit two hybrid modes, tube input with solid-state output, or the reverse, plus a fully passive mode that routes the signal straight through the volume control with no active gain stage at all. The Schiit Freya 2 automatically detects which tubes are installed and only unlocks the modes those tubes support, and it disables heater voltage to any tube not currently in use so idle tubes age no faster than if they were sitting in a box.
Relay-ladder volume and Forkbeard control
Volume control on the Schiit Freya 2 is handled entirely in the digital domain of switching, not the signal path: a relay ladder attenuator keeps nothing but precision resistors between input and output, a design Schiit has used across its higher-end preamps for its transparency. Every active mode offers selectable gain of 0dB or 12dB.
Control comes via Schiit’s Forkbeard system, which pairs with a free iOS or Android app for volume readout, balance adjustment and tube-health alerts, or via an included infrared remote for listeners who prefer not to use an app at all.
Build and connectivity
Inside, the Schiit Freya 2 runs a linear power supply with a 300V main rail and individually regulated 6V DC tube heaters, built around MELF and thin-film precision resistors, Vishay and Nichicon capacitors, Neutrik connectors and NEC relays. The rear panel carries two balanced XLR inputs and three single-ended RCA inputs, with balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs for driving a power amplifier.

Measured performance
Schiit publishes separate measurements for each gain mode of the Schiit Freya 2. In solid-state, low-gain mode, THD runs below 0.0007% with SNR above 120dB A-weighted. Switching to all-tube, low-gain mode raises THD to below 0.006% while SNR stays above 124dB, reflecting the characteristically low-noise behavior of Schiit’s tube circuits. Passive mode, with no active gain stage, measures below the noise floor of Schiit’s Audio Precision APx555 analyzer.

The Schiit Freya 2 slots above the tube-less Kara and the unbalanced Saga 2 in Schiit’s preamp lineup, aimed at listeners who want the option of tube coloration without giving up a solid-state fallback. For related reading, see our coverage of the Schiit Bifrost 3 DAC.
