Pro-Ject is going back to basics. The new Pro-Ject Debut Carbon The Original revives the formula that made the Debut Carbon one of the best-selling turntables of the past decade, and deliberately leaves out the modern extras. There is no Bluetooth, no USB output and no built-in phono stage: just a belt-driven turntable with a carbon tonearm, built to be connected to a proper phono input.
A return to the Debut formula
The Debut family dates back to 1998, and according to Pro-Ject it has sold more than one million units since then. In 2012 the Debut Carbon introduced a one-piece carbon tonearm to the range, a feature normally found on far more expensive record players. The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon The Original builds on that recipe, with a set of updates to the arm, the platter and the drive system. Like its predecessors, it is made by hand in Europe.

Carbon tonearm with a damped counterweight
The 8.6-inch tonearm is made from a single piece of carbon with a conical tube. It has an effective length of 218.5 mm, an effective mass of 7 g and an overhang of 18.5 mm. A counterweight damped with TPE reduces resonances in the arm and cartridge by up to 50%, according to Pro-Ject. Adaptive anti-skating and a silicone-damped arm lift complete the package.
The cartridge is the Pick it S2 MM, built by Ortofon and tuned by Pro-Ject. It uses an elliptical stylus and split-pole pins, and it comes pre-mounted and aligned, so setting up the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon The Original takes only a few minutes.

Steel platter and a stable AC motor
A 300 mm steel platter weighing 1.7 kg sits on a sub-platter of glass-fibre-reinforced ABS and comes with a felt mat. The AC synchronous motor is mounted in TPE and is fed by an internal DC/AC generator, which converts the DC from the external power supply into a stable AC signal. Speeds of 33 and 45 rpm are changed manually on the pulley.
The plinth is CNC-milled from solid MDF without internal cavities. Pro-Ject quotes wow and flutter of ±0.17% at 33 rpm and ±0.15% at 45 rpm, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 68 dB. The turntable uses 4 W in operation and nothing in standby.

Because there is no phono stage on board, you will need an amplifier with a phono input or a separate preamplifier. Pro-Ject recently showed another side of its range with the Pro-Ject Signal Orange.
