Spotify has started a new QR code verification process for some Premium Family plan members, asking them to prove they genuinely live with the person managing the plan. Both parties must complete the QR code verification together, in the same place, using the Spotify mobile app. The requirement was revealed through an update to Spotify’s own support pages rather than a press announcement, with coverage of the change emerging around October 19-21, 2026.
According to Spotify’s support article “Address and verification for Family plan,” the company “may ask some Premium Family members” to verify their household this way. The plan manager finds a QR code in the Spotify app by tapping their profile picture, then “Your Premium,” then “Manage.” The member being verified then scans that code with their own phone’s camera, while standing in the same location as the manager.

How QR Code Verification Works
Spotify says QR code verification can only be completed through its mobile app, and both the plan manager and the member being checked need the latest version installed. To prevent someone from simply forwarding a screenshot of the code, the QR code reportedly refreshes every few seconds, a detail confirmed by outlets that tested the feature rather than by Spotify’s own support page.
Once a member is selected for QR code verification, Spotify gives them seven days to complete the scan after being notified. Spotify has not said how members are chosen for a check, nor how widely the feature has rolled out or in which countries.
A 12-Month Penalty for Missing the Window
The consequences for failing or skipping verification are significant. Per Spotify’s support page, a member who fails or misses the seven-day window loses access to that Family or Duo plan and is moved to the free, ad-supported tier of Spotify. They remain able to rejoin the same Family or Duo plan, but cannot join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months from the date verification failed. Members are still free to sign up for their own individual Premium subscription during that period.
A Workaround Has Already Surfaced
Despite the rotating QR code, at least one report describes a workaround to Spotify’s QR code verification: starting a live video call or screen share between the two phones, allowing the second person to scan the code in real time even though the plan manager is not physically present. Spotify has not commented publicly on this method, and may introduce additional checks, such as IP address or VPN detection, of the kind already used by rivals like Netflix and Disney+ to enforce household restrictions.

Pricing and availability
QR code verification is a policy and account-security change rather than a paid feature, and does not alter Spotify Premium Family’s existing pricing. The check is already live for at least some Family plan members as of late October 2026; Spotify has not stated when, or whether, it will expand to all Family and Duo subscribers globally.
