The first three days of September 2025 started excellent! We were invited by Samsung to join a press trip to Cologne (Germany), the hometown of TÜV Rheinland. Samsung and TÜV Rheinland maintain a professional relationship centered on certification and testing services. TÜV Rheinland, a leading independent third-party testing, inspection, and certification organization based in Germany, regularly evaluates and certifies Samsung’s products for compliance with international standards related to safety, environmental impact, usability, and performance. This partnership helps Samsung validate the quality, sustainability, and innovation of its electronics, enhancing consumer trust and market positioning. In our short videoreport you can see the testing process of Samsung’s “Real Quantum Dot Displays”.

TÜV Rheinland

TÜV Rheinland is a globally recognized independent organization headquartered in Cologne, Germany, specializing in testing, inspection, certification, and training services. The acronym “TÜV” stands for Technischer Überwachungsverein, which translates to “Technical Inspection Association” in English. Founded in 1872, TÜV Rheinland originally focused on ensuring the safety of steam boilers during the Industrial Revolution. Over time, it evolved into a leading provider of technical services across industries, ensuring product safety, quality, and sustainability while promoting consumer and environmental protection.

The organization operates in over 60 countries, employing around 20,000 experts who assess products, systems, and processes against international standards. TÜV Rheinland’s services cover sectors like electronics, automotive, industrial equipment, and renewable energy, offering certifications for safety, environmental impact, cybersecurity, and usability. For example, it certifies consumer electronics for low blue-light emissions, automotive components for functional safety (ISO 26262), and products for carbon footprint reduction (ISO 14067). Its rigorous testing helps manufacturers like Samsung validate product quality, comply with regulations, and build consumer trust.

TÜV Rheinland’s certifications are highly regarded due to its impartiality and adherence to global standards, such as ISO, IEC, and regional regulations. It also provides training and consulting to help businesses meet compliance and sustainability goals. The organization’s work extends to emerging technologies, including AI, IoT, and autonomous vehicles, ensuring they meet safety and performance benchmarks.

Beyond technical services, TÜV Rheinland contributes to sustainability by verifying eco-friendly practices, such as energy efficiency and carbon reduction, aligning with global environmental goals. Its independence ensures unbiased assessments, making it a trusted partner for industries worldwide. For instance, its collaboration with Samsung includes certifying TVs and smartphones for environmental and performance standards, reinforcing its role as a key player in quality assurance and innovation.

Key aspects of the relationship with Samsung

  • Environmental and Sustainability Certifications: TÜV Rheinland has awarded Samsung multiple “Product Carbon Reduction” certifications for its TV lineups, such as the 2024 Neo QLED, OLED, and The Frame series, verifying reduced greenhouse gas emissions over product lifecycles compared to prior models, in line with ISO 14067 and ISO 14064-4 standards. Samsung was the first electronics company to receive this certification. Similar eco-certifications were granted to around 80 models of 2025 TVs, monitors, and soundbars. Additionally, TÜV Rheinland issued the industry’s first “Product Carbon Footprint Calculation Method” certification to Samsung’s Visual Display Business and a Product Carbon Footprint certificate for digital signage products like The Wall All-in-One.
  • Display and Eye Safety Certifications: Samsung’s displays, including AMOLED panels in Galaxy smartphones (e.g., S10 series) and QLED TVs, have earned “Eye Comfort” and “Low Vision Care” certifications for low blue-light emissions. QLED TVs also received “Real Quantum Dot Display” certification, confirming compliance with IEC 62595-1-6 standards for color accuracy and quantum dot technology.
  • Safety and Functional Certifications: TÜV Rheinland certified Samsung’s automotive semiconductors for ISO 26262 functional safety standards. Earlier, 2016 Smart TVs were certified for usability and remote control features.
  • Pre-Launch Product Testing: Upcoming Samsung devices, such as the Galaxy A56, A36, A26 (certified in early 2025 for charging speeds), and older models like the Galaxy M01s and M31s, appear in TÜV Rheinland’s database for battery and safety validations, often signaling imminent releases.

This ongoing collaboration spans over a decade, with certifications dating back to at least 2016, and continues to evolve with Samsung’s focus on sustainability and advanced technology.

Samsung’s Quantum Dot Displays

Samsung’s Quantum Dot Displays, often branded as QLED (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode), represent a cutting-edge display technology that enhances color accuracy, brightness, and energy efficiency in TVs, monitors, and other screens. Introduced in 2015, QLED leverages quantum dots—nanoscale semiconductor particles that emit or modify light when stimulated—to deliver superior visual performance. These displays are central to Samsung’s premium visual display lineup, including Neo QLED, QLED TVs, and high-end monitors, and are widely recognized for their vibrant colors and high contrast.

Quantum dots in Samsung’s displays are inorganic nanoparticles that produce precise colors by emitting light at specific wavelengths depending on their size. When illuminated by a backlight (typically blue LEDs), quantum dots enhance the color gamut, achieving up to 100% of the DCI-P3 color space, far surpassing traditional LCDs. This results in richer reds, greens, and blues, making QLED ideal for HDR (High Dynamic Range) content. Samsung’s Neo QLED, introduced in 2021, refines this with Mini LED backlighting, offering finer dimming zones for deeper blacks and higher contrast, rivaling OLED displays while avoiding burn-in issues.

Real Quantum Dot Display certification

Samsung’s Quantum Dot Displays are also certified for their performance and eco-friendliness. TÜV Rheinland has awarded certifications like “Real Quantum Dot Display” for compliance with IEC 62595-1-6 standards, ensuring accurate color reproduction, and “Eye Comfort” for low blue-light emissions, enhancing viewer safety. Additionally, these displays contribute to Samsung’s sustainability goals, with 2024 and 2025 models earning “Product Carbon Reduction” certifications for lower lifecycle emissions.

Quantum Dot all around

Used in products like the Galaxy Book series, Odyssey gaming monitors, and The Wall digital signage, QLED technology supports applications from entertainment to professional displays. Samsung’s ongoing innovation, including QD-OLED (combining quantum dots with OLED), pushes boundaries, blending self-emissive pixels with quantum dot color precision, cementing its leadership in display technology.

Frequently asked questions

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
