A special gala ceremony in London announced the winners of the Sony World Photography Awards 2025. The prestigious event, held at Somerset House, brought together leading names from the photography world to celebrate this year’s achievements. From April 17 to May 5, the exhibition is open to the public at the same historic venue, showcasing more than 300 prints and hundreds of digital images, including a special presentation by Susan Meiselas.
Photographer of the Year
The title Photographer of the Year 2025 was awarded to British photographer Zed Nelson, known for his impressive series The Anthropocene Illusion. Nelson not only receives the honor but also a cash prize of $25,000, Sony Digital Imaging equipment, and the opportunity to present additional work at the Sony World Photography Awards 2026.
About The Anthropocene Illusion
Nelson’s project is an extensive documentary work spanning six years and four continents. It explores the complex relationship between humans and the natural world, focusing on the influence of the ‘Anthropocene’ — the current geological era in which humans are the dominant force impacting the environment. The series features artificial spaces such as safari parks, nature reserves, museums, and urban green spaces, symbolizing humanity’s attempt to stay connected to nature while our activities continue to harm the planet.
Judges’ Comments on Nelson’s Work
Monica Allende, chair of the jury, praised Nelson’s work: “The jury was impressed by how he visually translates complex environmental issues. ‘The Anthropocene Illusion’ highlights the blurring between real and artificial, challenging us to reflect on our role in this global paradox. Nelson tells one of the most urgent stories of our time.”
Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award
In addition to the main award, documentary photographer Susan Meiselas was honored with the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award. Recognized for her influential documentary work, Meiselas’s long-term and meaningful contribution to photography is celebrated. Her work is extensively displayed during the exhibition.
Professional Category Winners
This year, ten talented photographers won in the professional categories, selected by an expert jury. Each distinguished themselves through innovative approaches and exceptional technical skills. As part of their prizes, winners were invited to Insights, an exclusive day in London featuring sessions with industry experts. These sessions aim to inspire and provide practical insights to help further develop their creative and professional goals.
All category winners also receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, enabling them to continue refining and expanding their work.
