Pro-Ject Audio Systems, a leading name in high-fidelity audio, has unveiled the E1.2, the latest addition to its acclaimed E-Line of entry-level turntables. Priced at just €329 (approximately $329 in the U.S.), the Pro-Ject E1.2 is a fully manual, plug-and-play turntable designed to deliver exceptional analog sound for vinyl enthusiasts on a budget. Handcrafted in Europe, this turntable combines affordability with audiophile-grade performance, making it an ideal choice for newcomers and seasoned vinyl lovers alike.

A Legacy of Affordable Excellence

Pro-Ject Audio Systems has long been celebrated for its mission to bring high-quality analog experiences to a broad audience. Since its founding in 1991, the Austrian company has prioritized precision engineering and value, earning a reputation as the world’s leading manufacturer of turntables. The E1.2 builds on the success of its predecessor, the Pro-Ject E1, launched in 2022, by introducing key upgrades that enhance sound quality while maintaining the plug-and-play simplicity that made the original a favorite.

As Pro-Ject states, the E1.2 is designed to counter the trend of low-cost turntables that sacrifice quality for gimmicks. “Unlike many mass-produced entry-level decks that attempt to lure buyers with long feature lists but little focus on sound, the E1.2 strips away the non-essentials,” the company notes, emphasizing its commitment to delivering “beautiful analogue sound” through thoughtful design and craftsmanship.

Key Features and Upgrades

The E1.2 introduces several significant improvements over the original E1, ensuring better performance without compromising affordability. At the heart of the turntable is a new 730-gram die-cast aluminum platter with a built-in TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) damping ring. This design minimizes resonance and ensures stable rotation, resulting in improved wow and flutter performance for precise playback. The sub-platter, crafted from glass-fiber-reinforced ABS polymer, further enhances speed accuracy and reduces unwanted vibrations.

The tonearm has also been upgraded, featuring a heavy-mass gimbal design with high-quality bearings and a carbon-fiber-reinforced headshell to reduce vibrations. A strategically placed oversized counterweight improves balance and tracking, delivering detailed sound and robust bass response. Pre-installed with the new Pro-Ject Pick it MM E cartridge, which features a lightweight neodymium magnet and a conical diamond stylus, the E1.2 offers a warm, clear tone with minimal background noise—a marked improvement over the Ortofon OM 5 SE cartridge used in the original E1.

The E1.2 retains the plug-and-play ethos of the E-Line, with pre-adjusted tracking force and anti-skating settings for hassle-free setup. Users can switch between 33 1/3 and 45 RPM with a single button, and the turntable comes with a high-quality 1.23-meter phono cable and a transparent dust cover. Available in black, white, or walnut finishes, its CNC-machined composite fiber plinth ensures a resonance-free structure, adding both aesthetic appeal and acoustic integrity.

Sound Quality and Performance

Pro-Ject’s focus on sound-first design shines through in the E1.2. Reviewers have praised its ability to deliver a warm, engaging soundstage that avoids the overly bright or fatiguing qualities of some budget turntables. The upgraded cartridge and tonearm contribute to a detailed and dynamic listening experience, making the E1.2 a standout in its price range. “The E1.2 carries forward the spirit of the original Pro-Ject 1, offering a simple, well-made turntable that puts analogue sound first,” notes The Ear, highlighting its role in welcoming new listeners to high-fidelity vinyl playback.

Unlike some competitors, such as the Audio-Technica AT-LP120X-USB, which offer features like Bluetooth or USB connectivity, the E1.2 prioritizes pure analog performance. It lacks a built-in phono stage, requiring users to pair it with an amplifier that includes one or an external phono preamp, such as Pro-Ject’s own Phono Box series. This minimalist approach ensures that every component is optimized for sound quality, making it a compelling choice for purists.

Value and Sustainability

Priced at €329, the E1.2 offers remarkable value, undercutting many competitors while delivering audiophile-grade performance. Its handmade construction in Europe underscores Pro-Ject’s commitment to quality and sustainability. The company also supports long-term ownership with a two-year warranty and a guarantee of spare parts availability for 25 years, ensuring the E1.2 remains a reliable investment for years to come.

For those looking to upgrade, the E1.2’s design allows for easy customization. Users can swap cartridges, cables, or mats to tailor the sound to their preferences, making it a versatile platform for growing vinyl collections. Pro-Ject’s extensive ecosystem of accessories further enhances its appeal for hobbyists.

Availability and Final Thoughts

The Pro-Ject E1.2 is available now through authorized dealers, including retailers like Unilet Sound & Vision and Turntable Lab. While exact availability may vary, its competitive price and robust feature set make it a strong contender in the entry-level audiophile market.

For vinyl newcomers or budget-conscious audiophiles, the Pro-Ject E1.2 offers an unbeatable combination of performance, simplicity, and style. By focusing on the essentials—precision engineering, high-quality materials, and superb sound—it sets a new standard for affordable turntables. As Pro-Ject continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible at this price point, the E1.2 stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of vinyl and the company’s dedication to making high-fidelity audio accessible to all.

His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
