Pioneer Revives Retro Box Speakers With the TS-X40SXT

A free-standing parcel shelf speaker brings JDM nostalgia to classic car audio with modern bass reflex engineering

Pioneer has introduced the TS-X40SXT, a free-standing “box type” speaker that revives the classic parcel shelf look that defined a generation of car audio enthusiasts. The Pioneer TS-X40SXT pairs that nostalgic silver-and-mesh design with a modern 3-way bass reflex engine, aiming squarely at owners of classic and JDM-inspired cars who want period-correct looks without giving up contemporary sound quality.

Classic Looks, Three-Way Engineering

Inside its retro enclosure, the Pioneer TS-X40SXT houses a deep-profile cone woofer, a midrange driver, and a large tweeter in a genuine 3-way bass reflex configuration. A Double-Slit Port design is tuned to deliver rich, controlled bass from the enclosed cabinet, while the oversized tweeter is positioned to keep clarity and presence strong through the mid-to-high frequency range, something flat parcel shelf speakers of the original era struggled to achieve.

Faithful to the Original TS-X60

Pioneer built the TS-X40SXT as a direct tribute to the iconic TS-X60 box speaker, carrying over the classic silver enclosure, the premium wire-mesh grille, and the vintage Pioneer logo treatment that collectors immediately recognize. Every visual detail was chosen to celebrate that heritage while the internals were brought fully up to date, giving the new model the look of an original find in genuinely clean condition.

Built for Easy, Non-Destructive Installation

Pioneer designed the TS-X40SXT to protect a classic car’s originality during installation. The speakers come with universal mounting brackets and a 5-meter wiring set, allowing them to sit securely on a rear parcel shelf without cutting into original panels. Three mounting points, positioned centrally and on the left and right rear, support both side-mounted and front-mounted placement depending on the vehicle.

Pricing and availability

The Pioneer TS-X40SXT is available now through Pioneer’s European dealer network; exact retail pricing is set locally per market. Full specifications and a short product video are available on the official Pioneer TS-X40SXT product page, alongside Pioneer’s “Fit My Car” tool for checking compatibility with specific vehicles.

Publisher

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
