Swiss high-end audio legend Nagra has introduced the Nagra Streamer, the inaugural product in its new Compact Line. This meticulously engineered network streamer bridges the gap between modern digital music sources and ultra-high-end playback systems, delivering uncompromised access to high-resolution streaming and local files in a form factor inspired by Nagra’s storied professional recorders.
Marking a significant expansion of Nagra’s portfolio nearly 20 years after the acclaimed Nagra CDC reference CD player and 30 years after the groundbreaking Nagra D digital recorder, the Streamer embodies the brand’s philosophy of precision, ruggedness, and musical purity. Designed to be “as large as necessary but no larger,” its chassis – reminiscent of the iconic Nagra VII – is CNC-machined from a solid billet of aluminum, ensuring exceptional rigidity and vibration resistance in a footprint of just 185 x 166 x 41 mm (7.2 x 6.5 x 1.6 inches) and weighing 1.9 kg (4.1 lb).
Dedicated digital transport
At its core, the Nagra Streamer is a dedicated digital transport with no integrated DAC, allowing it to pair seamlessly with Nagra’s reference-grade converters like the HD DAC X or Tube DAC. Key outputs include the proprietary N-Link optical connection (using customer-supplied fiber optic cable) for galvanically isolated, high-bandwidth transmission to compatible Nagra DACs, and S/PDIF for integration with third-party converters (up to 192 kHz PCM and DSD64 via DoP).
Connectivity is comprehensive yet focused: Ethernet RJ45 for network streaming, plus USB-A for direct playback from hard drives or memory sticks. Supported services include Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, Roon Ready, AirPlay 2, UPnP/DLNA, vTuner internet radio, and compatibility with Audirvāna and JPLAY. The free mConnect app (iOS/Android) provides intuitive control and firmware updates.
Power comes from an included external 12V DC supply, with significant sonic upgrades possible via Nagra’s MPS, ACPS, or Classic PSU options – a hallmark of the brand’s modular approach to performance optimization.
As Nagra states on its product page:
“Nagra is all about music. The Nagra Streamer is the missing link between modern music sources and your high quality set-up. It extends your listening pleasure to virtually the universe of recorded music via digital streams and high resolution files. We think that you will find that it was worth the wait.”
Signal purity and system synergy
In a market crowded with all-in-one streamers, the Nagra Streamer stands apart by prioritizing signal purity and system synergy over convenience features. Its optical N-Link output ensures perfect isolation from network noise, while the robust mechanical design minimizes interference – ideals rooted in Nagra’s seven decades of professional audio heritage.
Early impressions from high-end publications, including Qobuz Magazine’s coverage highlighting “Swiss perfection in network playback,” underscore its potential to elevate reference systems without compromise.
The Nagra Streamer is available now through authorized dealers. For those building or refining a no-holds-barred digital front end, this Compact Line debut represents a compelling return to Nagra’s digital roots – compact in size, monumental in ambition
