68Apple has taken the wraps off the iPhone Duo, the company’s first foldable iPhone and, in Apple’s own words, the most transformational change to the lineup since the original iPhone launched in 2007. Unfolded, iPhone Duo carries a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple calls the largest and thinnest screen ever fitted to an iPhone; folded shut, a 5.4-inch outer display keeps the phone pocketable while still covering roughly 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Pre-orders open October 16, with the first units shipping October 23 in Night Sky and Star White. Full details are available on Apple’s official iPhone Duo page.
Two Displays, One Continuous Canvas
Both screens on iPhone Duo share the same aspect ratio, so content scales cleanly whether the phone is open or closed. The inner Super Retina XDR panel is built from ten ultrathin layers finished with a custom nano-texture coating designed to cut glare and soften the visibility of the crease, while a FaceTime camera hides beneath the display until it’s needed. Apple rates peak brightness at 3,000 nits across both panels, and ProMotion and Always-On carry over from the rest of the iPhone range. A precision hinge, engineered from more than 100 components, holds the display flat when open and closes with a magnet-assisted snap.

iPhone Duo Doubles Down on Multitasking
The extra canvas is put to work through Split View, which lets two apps run side by side on an iPhone for the first time. iPhone Duo also supports two windows of the same app at once, handy for comparing tabs in Safari, along with quick app-swapping and saved app pairs that return to a favourite combination with a single tap. A conversation with Siri AI can run down one side of the inner display while content stays visible on the other, and StandBy gains new Calendar and Weather faces for when the phone is set down open or closed.

A20 Pro and a Battery Built for Two
Powering iPhone Duo is the new A20 Pro chip, paired with an advanced thermal system built around a custom vapor chamber inspired by Apple’s M-series silicon. Apple says the combination delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, with a 6-core CPU up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine offering twice the on-device AI throughput of its predecessor. A first-for-iPhone dual-battery architecture, combined with an eSIM-only design that frees up internal space, is rated for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display or 44 hours on the outer one.
A Camera System With New Folding Tricks
iPhone Duo pairs a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide and a 12MP Center Stage front camera, plus the hidden under-display FaceTime camera. The folding design unlocks features no other iPhone offers: Duo Preview shows subjects a live feed on the outer display while they pose, Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations to grab a child’s attention, Duo FaceTime lets a second person join a call from the outer screen, and Smart Take waits for everyone to be ready before firing the shutter. Video tops out at 4K120 in Dolby Vision, with Cinematic effects now applicable after capture.

iPhone Duo now enters a foldable market Samsung has spent years refining. See how the two philosophies compare in our earlier look at Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8 lineup.
