The System Audio Silverback range was one of the most thought-provoking things we heard at Dutch Audio Event 2026. In the System Audio room, founder and owner Ole Witthøft gave us a personal tour of the Silverback family: a complete range of wireless active loudspeakers that scales from a simple stereo pair to a Dolby Atmos home theatre. Before we get to the speakers, though, there is a story worth telling.

From Musician to Loudspeaker Maker
Long before he built loudspeakers, Ole Witthøft was a musician. He played in a band, they performed live, and like every band they eventually reached the moment they had been working towards: recording their music in a real studio.
They came home with the finished recording, played it back on conventional hi-fi systems, and were bitterly disappointed. What came out of the speakers was not what they had heard in the studio. It was not even what they had played. For Ole, the reproduction was simply not good enough, and that frustration became the starting point. If the speakers could not do justice to the music, he would build speakers that could.
Still young, he started building his own designs. The next challenge was getting them to people. Ole opened a small shop with three or four speakers of his own, from a compact bookshelf model up to a larger floorstander, and a very clear idea of how he wanted to sell them. Every visitor would start with the most affordable speaker and move up the range until they said: “Now I don’t hear a difference anymore.” That was the right speaker for them. He refused to let a customer pay more for something they could not hear.
There was just one problem: nobody came in. Every day people walked past and looked through the window, one man in particular, but no one opened the door. So Ole wrote a letter, printed it and started handing it out, including to the man who kept stopping at his window. Eventually he walked in. It is a lovely story of frustration turned into motivation, and of a musician who found his purpose in life and grew into a loudspeaker manufacturer.
System Audio: hearing is choosing
That same philosophy still runs through System Audio today. The Danish company designs its own drive units, its own amplification and its own software, and it builds its ranges around a simple idea: you should choose a speaker with your ears, not with a spec sheet. Ole’s ideal is that someone listens to the smallest model, then to the bigger ones, hears “more of everything”, and picks the speaker that matches their own musical needs.
It explains why all System Audio Silverback models look strikingly similar from the front. The drivers seem identical, but they are not. System Audio uses three different kinds of 5.5-inch woofers and midrange drivers, with different magnet systems, mechanics and performance behind the same clean face. “We don’t want to disturb people’s eyes,” says Ole. The result is a family with one visual language and one sound signature: a small box, a medium box, a larger box, or one to hang on the wall.
System Audio Silverback: one ecosystem, up to eight wireless channels
The System Audio Silverback range is not just a line of loudspeakers but a complete system. Every System Audio Silverback speaker is fully active and digital, with a dedicated amplifier for each driver, and receives its signal wirelessly from a central hub. That hub can drive up to eight channels in 24-bit/96kHz, so the same ecosystem grows from a two-channel stereo setup into a multichannel home theatre with Dolby Atmos.
The hub: streaming, sources and room correction

The hub is the heart of the system. System Audio offers it as the Stereo Hub HT for two-channel setups and the Surround Hub for multichannel and Dolby Atmos systems. It receives everything: streaming via Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Chromecast, AirPlay and Bluetooth, as well as physical sources such as a turntable or CD player. Because the hub sends everything on wirelessly, it doesn’t even have to sit in a visible place. Fewer boxes, far fewer cables, no power conditioners: a simple system of very high quality, or as Ole puts it, “a new way to be an audiophile”.
The wireless link between hub and speakers uses WiSA technology, with a latency of just five milliseconds, so picture and sound stay perfectly in sync when you watch a film. Ole calls it “the loudspeaker cable of the future. The invisible cable.”
The hub also handles room correction, controlled through the SA Cockpit app. You measure your room with the microphone in your iPhone or, on Android, with System Audio’s wireless measurement microphone. It takes about a minute and, according to Ole, makes “a huge, huge difference” to what you hear. The same app allows very fine adjustments to the sound.
Full sound at low volume
One of the most interesting ideas behind System Audio Silverback is how it handles low listening levels. Ole points out that we listen at low volume about 95% of the time, because we live with children, neighbours and partners, and at low volume our ears mainly pick up the midrange. Because System Audio Silverback is fully digital, System Audio can preserve the full spectrum even then: deep bass down to 20Hz and the fine detail of the treble, at whisper level. Ole admits that demonstrating this to a room full of thirty men listening to quiet music feels a little awkward. But once people hear it, he says, “they understand that this is something they cannot ignore.”
Deep bass from a sealed box
Deep bass matters to System Audio. According to Ole, digital recording changed music in the 1990s: bands like Massive Attack and Rage Against the Machine introduced much deeper bass, and almost all music has followed since. “If you only listen to music from the 70s, it’s okay to stop at 70 hertz. But today, not anymore.” To move that much air from compact drivers, System Audio Silverback combines powerful amplifiers with long-throw drive units, with about 40% more excursion than a typical 5.5-inch driver, in closed cabinets for clean, fast and precise bass.

The System Audio Silverback models
Legend 60.2 Silverback DS
The top of the range. A four-way active floorstander with four amplifiers per speaker (tweeter, midrange and two pairs of woofers) and a frequency response down to 17Hz, deeper than many subwoofers. €8,799 per pair.

Legend 40.2 Silverback DS
A floorstander with four built-in 300W amplifiers, one for each driver, and bass down to 20Hz. Available in black and white. A complete system with hub costs €5,000.

Legend 5.2 Silverback DS
A bookshelf speaker with two built-in amplifiers and the same ecosystem: WiSA, hub, room correction. €2,600 per pair.

Silverback 1
An even more compact model, about half the size of the 5.2. It was not on show at Dutch Audio Event.

Legend 7.2 Silverback
The on-wall model, and Ole’s “secret love”. Drive units are designed on an infinite baffle, essentially a wall, so placing them close to a wall puts them in a more natural environment than any cabinet. No rear reflections, plus impressive precision and deep bass. It is not the easiest speaker to sell, Ole admits, but those who hear it are surprised.

For home theatre, the family is completed by the Legend 10.2 Silverback centre speaker, the Silverback Sub Solo and Sub Duo subwoofers and the Silverbar soundbar, all on the same wireless platform.

Our take
System Audio Silverback is a refreshingly different take on high-end. Instead of separate components, cables and power conditioners, System Audio offers one coherent ecosystem: active speakers, a streaming hub, wireless transmission in 24-bit/96kHz and room correction in an app, scalable from stereo to eight channels. Add the approach that runs through the whole company, choose with your ears and pay only for the difference you can hear, and you understand why this was one of the more thought-provoking rooms at Dutch Audio Event 2026. It is a philosophy that began with a disappointed young musician, and you can still hear it today.
