In the crowded arena of wireless active speakers, where convenience often trumps sonic finesse, Triangle—a venerable French manufacturer with over four decades of acoustic heritage—has unveiled a contender that refuses to compromise. The Capella system, priced at €2.499 for the pair including the Stereo Hub, arrives as a masterclass in blending artisanal driver design with cutting-edge digital smarts. Launched in mid-2024 and now widely available, the Capella isn’t just a streaming solution; it’s a fully active stereo setup that promises to elevate rooms from 15 to 40 square meters with the poise of a high-end standmount pair, minus the cable clutter.

At the heart of the Capella lies Triangle’s signature horn-loaded tweeter: a 25mm magnesium alloy dome paired with a precision phase plug, engineered for wide, harmonious dispersion of highs without a hint of harshness. This feeds into a 16cm cellulose pulp midwoofer, a hallmark of Triangle’s passive speaker legacy, delivering midrange purity and bass extension down to 42Hz (±3dB). The bass-reflex cabinets, finished in luxurious lacquered walnut or Astral Blue veneer, measure a compact 380mm H x 200mm W x 315mm D and sit atop aluminum bases for optimal port airflow. Rubberized rings around the drivers and curved cabinet edges minimize diffraction and reflections, ensuring a clean, expansive soundstage.

Power comes courtesy of bi-amplification: 50W per channel per speaker (100W total per speaker, 200W system-wide) via efficient Class D modules, each tied to dedicated DACs and DSP for linear response and room-tailored correction. The digital crossover keeps things seamless, taming bass for deeper control while sharpening vocals and imaging. Reviewers have praised its “smooth-sounding” demeanor and ability to reveal musical subtleties, from a pianist’s delicate touch to the texture in a jazz vocalist’s breath. It’s no surprise—Triangle’s Borea series already earned accolades for value-driven performance, and the Capella builds on that with active precision.

The secret sauce? A compact Stereo Hub (45mm H x 70mm W x 100mm D) that acts as command central, transmitting hi-res audio (up to 24-bit/192kHz digital, 24-bit/96kHz via WiSA) to the speakers with just 2.6ms latency—imperceptible for music or movies. This WiSA-certified wireless link frees you from speaker cables, letting you tuck the hub near your sources while positioning the Capellas anywhere in the room. Inputs are generous: HDMI ARC (with CEC for TV control), three opticals, coaxial, USB-B, stereo RCA, 3.5mm aux, plus Bluetooth 5.2 (up to 16-bit/48kHz) and Wi-Fi for AirPlay 2, Chromecast, UPnP/DLNA, and Roon Ready certification. Supported formats span FLAC, WAV, ALAC, AAC, and MP3, making it a one-box gateway for turntables, streamers, or your NAS library.

Ease of use is paramount, with setup via the Google Home app for Wi-Fi pairing and a simple button press to link the hub and speakers. The Triangle Capella app (iOS/Android) takes it further, offering automatic room calibration using your phone’s mic (Apple built-in; Android needs the optional Zen mic) or manual EQ tweaks for genre-specific voicing. An RF remote handles basics, and the system doubles as a TV soundbar alternative via ARC/optical. For deeper bass chasers, while the original lacks a sub out, whispers of an upgraded Capella 2 with subwoofer integration and native Spotify/Tidal Connect have surfaced, hinting at future-proofing.

I was playing vinyl when I was 3 years old. There was a song from the Rubettes that I liked a lot "Sugar Baby Love". My mother still cherishes the photo of me spinning that record! The audiophile was born. As an adult the video enthusiast in me woke up, making professional corporate movies. Here, at "Best of high end", I can indulge my audiovisual senses.
