Sony Unveils ECM-AX10, World’s First Eclipsa Audio Certified Smartphone Mic
Sony has announced the Sony ECM-AX10, the world’s first microphone to earn Eclipsa Audio certification for smartphones. Aimed at vloggers, mobile filmmakers and everyday content creators, the compact USB-C accessory is designed to make smartphone video sound as immersive and spatially accurate as the footage now looks.
Four Capsules, One Spherical Module
At the heart of the ECM-AX10 is a newly developed spherical microphone module built around four omnidirectional capsules, which together capture sound from every direction around the scene. Combined with Sony’s spatial audio processing, the microphone reconstructs a sense of direction, distance and atmosphere, whether that is a street performer, a festival crowd, a sports match or a quiet behind-the-scenes moment. Sony worked with Sony PCL, its post-production specialist subsidiary, to tune the microphone’s sound quality using real-world recordings, from orchestral pieces to ambient city noise.
Three Recording Modes, One Workflow
Creators get three ways to capture audio with the ECM-AX10. Ambisonics recording pairs with Sony’s dedicated Spatial Audio Video Tool app to publish directly in Eclipsa Audio on YouTube. Binaural recording uses the same spatial technology behind Sony’s 360 Reality Audio to deliver an immersive headphone experience even on platforms that don’t support Eclipsa Audio. Stereo recording covers everyday social clips. The companion app lets users shoot, review, make basic edits and export spatial audio video entirely on the phone, so the whole production workflow stays on one device.
Built for Spontaneous Filming
Weighing around 24g, the ECM-AX10 connects directly to a compatible smartphone over USB-C, with no separate recorder or audio interface needed. It works with iOS 18 or later and Android 14 or later on supported devices, and 4K video recording through the companion app is planned to arrive from December 2026. Sony is positioning the microphone as a grab-and-go accessory rather than a studio tool, small enough to carry alongside a phone at all times.
Pricing and Availability
The Sony ECM-AX10 becomes available from October 2026, priced at approximately £179 / €199. It is certified as of September 15, 2026 against the Eclipsa Audio standard, an open-source spatial audio technology based on the IAMF specification and available royalty-free through the Alliance for Open Media. Readers looking at other recent audio launches can also see how Sony’s approach compares with the Gold Note DS-5.2’s Roon Ready update, a very different take on making audio gear easier to use.
