Sony has taken the wraps off the successors to Pulse Elite, its first planar magnetic PS5 headset from 2024, with two new models that split the range into a mainstream and a premium tier: PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset and PlayStation Pulse Edge Wireless Headset. Both keep the studio-inspired planar magnetic driver design that earned Pulse Elite its reputation for precise, spatially accurate sound, while adding larger drivers for fuller, deeper bass and carrying PlayStation Link connectivity for lossless, ultra-low-latency audio across PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC and Mac.
PlayStation Pulse: The New Standard Headset
PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset is built around custom planar magnetic drivers with four magnets per driver, tuned for the sound separation and directional accuracy that matters in competitive shooters — picking out a footstep or a reload cue without it getting buried in the mix. An integrated microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection handles chat, and the earcups rotate flat for easier portability in a bag. PlayStation Link comes via an included USB Type-C adapter, and the headset can hold a simultaneous Bluetooth connection alongside it, so switching between a PS5 session and a phone call doesn’t mean pulling anything apart. It launches in White and Midnight Black.
PlayStation Pulse Edge: The Premium Tier
PlayStation Pulse Edge is the headset aimed at players who want Pulse Elite’s successor rather than its replacement-on-a-budget. Its planar magnetic drivers carry double the magnet volume of the standard Pulse, pushing bass further while keeping the same clarity in the details. Sony has added active noise cancellation, something the standard Pulse skips, along with a detachable boom mic with its own AI noise rejection — remove it and a hidden mic takes over for casual chat. Pulse Edge also ships with a carrying case and uses noticeably more premium materials throughout, positioning it as the headset for players who’d otherwise have looked at a high-end third-party gaming headset instead.
What’s Shared Across Both Headsets
Beyond the driver and mic differences, Pulse and Pulse Edge share the same core feature set: PlayStation Link support for switching seamlessly between any Link-compatible device, built-in volume control, and an updated form factor with rotating earcups built for long sessions and easy transport. Neither headset locks players into a single ecosystem — both fall back to standard Bluetooth when Link isn’t available, and Pulse Edge adds a physical audio/microphone jack that the standard Pulse omits, alongside built-in game audio and chat balance control on PS5 that isn’t present on the entry model.
The two-tier approach mirrors what’s happened across most of the wireless gaming headset category over the past few years, as manufacturers split mainstream and enthusiast buyers into separate product lines rather than a single do-it-all model. Pricing and availability
Sony has not yet announced pricing for either headset. PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset is set to launch in select markets this holiday season, while PlayStation Pulse Edge Wireless Headset follows in early 2027. Sony says pre-order dates, launch dates and pricing will be announced separately closer to release.
