Skullcandy has redefined gaming audio with the launch of the Crusher PLYR 720, the first gaming headset to combine the brand’s patented Crusher multi-sensory bass technology with an open-back design and THX® Spatial Audio. Priced at $259.99, this innovative headset promises an immersive “4D gaming” experience, delivering visceral sound and precise audio positioning for gamers across multiple platforms.

A New Era of Immersive Audio

The Crusher PLYR 720 introduces a groundbreaking fusion of Skullcandy’s signature Crusher bass, open-back acoustics, and THX Spatial Audio with head-tracking capabilities. This combination creates a 360° soundstage that lets gamers feel every explosion, engine roar, and creeping footstep with unparalleled intensity and clarity. Unlike traditional haptic headphones, the Crusher PLYR 720’s dual 40mm bass drivers fire directly into the ears, offering a natural, subwoofer-like experience that enhances in-game realism.

This isn’t just immersive—it’s 4D gaming, said Justin Regan, Vice President of Marketing at Skullcandy. The Crusher PLYR 720 combines advanced features, app customization, and crisp audio to put players in full command of their sensory experience.

Key Features for Gamers

The Crusher PLYR 720 is designed for versatility and performance, catering to both competitive and casual gamers. Available in two models—Multi-Platform (wireless for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile, with wired Xbox support) and Designed for Xbox (wireless for Xbox and compatible with other platforms)—the headset offers a robust feature set:

  • Crusher Multi-Sensory Bass: Adjustable bass drivers deliver tactile, full-body immersion, tuned for in-game audio realism.

  • THX Spatial Audio with Head Tracking: Provides precise 3D audio positioning, allowing gamers to pinpoint enemies and enhance situational awareness, accessible via the Skullcandy Mobile App for console and mobile gaming.

  • Open-Back Design: Creates a wide, natural soundstage for crystal-clear audio, ideal for immersive gaming and cinematic experiences.

  • Skull-HQ and Skullcandy Mobile Apps: Enable advanced customization, including a 10-band EQ, Crusher EQ settings, RGB lighting adjustments, and Enhanced Sound Perception (ESP) for personalized hearing profiles.

  • Dual Wireless Connectivity: Supports Bluetooth 5.3 LE Audio and low-latency 2.4GHz wireless, allowing simultaneous game audio and secondary audio streams (e.g., Discord or music) with independent volume controls.

  • Game-Ready Communications: Features Clear Voice Smart Mic technology, Sidetone, and Chatmix Control for clear voice communication.

  • All-Day Comfort: Offers up to 48 hours of battery life (38 hours with dual wireless), breathable memory foam ear cushions, and a weight-dispersing suspension headband, though the silicone band’s long-term durability raises some concerns.

  • Multi-Platform Support: Compatible with PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices, with wired options via 3.5mm AUX and USB-C to USB-A cables.

The headset weighs 354g, which is slightly heavier than some competitors, but its open-back design minimizes heat buildup, ensuring comfort during extended sessions.

Performance and Reception

Early reviews highlight the Crusher PLYR 720’s unique bass-driven experience, likening it to “having a subwoofer strapped to your head.” The headset excels in games like Call of Duty, where the tactile bass enhances the impact of explosions, though prolonged use at maximum Crusher intensity may cause fatigue for some users. The open-back design, while delivering a spacious soundstage, offers minimal noise isolation, making it best suited for quiet gaming environments.

“THX Spatial Audio brings pinpoint accuracy, allowing gamers to locate sneaking enemies and gain early detection of threats,” said Mike Henein, Director of Product Development at THX Ltd. “Combined with Skullcandy’s Crusher technology, it elevates emotional realism and immersion.”

Availability and Pricing

The Crusher PLYR 720 is available now exclusively at Skullcandy.com and Amazon for $259.99. Both the Multi-Platform and Xbox-specific models cater to a wide range of gamers, with the Xbox version offering seamless wireless connectivity for Xbox consoles.

Beyond Gaming

While designed for gaming, the Crusher PLYR 720 is also ideal for movies and music, with its open-back acoustics and THX Spatial Audio creating a cinematic experience for titles like Hellblade or Transformers. The headset’s versatility makes it a compelling choice for anyone seeking immersive audio across multiple media.

A Bold Step Forward

Skullcandy’s Crusher PLYR 720 sets a new standard in gaming audio by blending innovative technology with bold design. As the company continues to push boundaries, this headset positions itself as a must-have for gamers who crave a sensory experience that goes beyond traditional audio. Whether you’re a competitive FPS player or an RPG enthusiast, the Crusher PLYR 720 promises to make every moment in the game feel alive.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
