In an era where inflation seems to infiltrate every corner of the high-end audio world, Wharfedale has delivered a masterclass in defiance. The British audio stalwart has just launched the Diamond 12i series, a refined iteration of its best-selling Diamond 12 lineup that promises sharper bass control, elevated aesthetics, and—crucially—the exact same wallet-friendly prices as its 2020 predecessor. Hitting shelves this December, this update isn’t a radical overhaul but a subtle evolution, honing the series’ legendary “sound-per-pound” ethos to deliver even more engaging hi-fi performance without a penny’s upcharge.

Since its debut in 1982, the Wharfedale Diamond range has been synonymous with accessible excellence, earning a shelf’s worth of “Product of the Year” awards and redefining entry-level speakers as genuine contenders for audiophile hearts. The Diamond 12 series, introduced five years ago, solidified that legacy as Britain’s top-selling budget range, blending neutrality, transparency, and rhythmic drive across genres from blistering rock riffs to intricate classical passages. Now, the 12i refresh builds on that foundation with manufacturing tweaks that squeeze out incremental gains in clarity and dynamics, all while keeping real-world costs down by about 22% when adjusted for inflation.

Wharfedale’s Diamond series has always been about democratizing true high-fidelity sound, says Peter Comeau, Wharfedale’s Director of Acoustics. With the 12i, we’ve leveraged advances in our design and production processes to enhance what was already a benchmark in value. It’s not about chasing trends—it’s about refining the essentials so every listener can experience music as the artist intended.

Subtle Upgrades, Profound Impact

At its core, the Diamond 12i retains the driver architecture that made the original Diamond 12 a hit: Klarity™ composite cones (a polypropylene-mica blend) for bass and midrange drivers, delivering low distortion, high rigidity, and a lively, uncolored response. These are paired with a 25mm woven polyester dome tweeter, featuring a minimal waveguide for wide dispersion and smooth high-frequency extension. Crossover networks stick to a sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley topology with air-core inductors, ensuring phase coherence and fatigue-free listening sessions.

The real refinements shine in the details. Drive units now boast tighter production tolerances, maximizing their sonic potential right out of the box. A redesigned bass-reflex port, informed by laser interferometry, computational fluid dynamics, and rigorous in-room testing, unlocks “improved bass clarity and control.” Expect more articulate lows, seamless handoffs to the midrange, and consistent spatial imaging—even in less-than-ideal room setups. Cabinets, constructed from multi-layer wood fiber board with Intelligent Spot Bracing (computer-modeled reinforcements that outsmart traditional bracing), further tame resonances for a purer, more immersive soundstage.

Visually, the 12i steps up its game with three contemporary finishes: a sleek semi-matt Deep Black, a modern Stone Grey, and a premium Classic Walnut with a contrasting black baffle. These updates lend a more upscale vibe, bridging the gap between budget builds and high-end aesthetics without inflating the bill.

A Lineup for Every Space and System

The Diamond 12i series spans five stereo models—three compact standmounts and two floorstanders—plus a dedicated center channel (Diamond 12cc) and surround speaker (Diamond 12ds) for home theater enthusiasts. All maintain the same dimensions, sensitivity, and impedance as their forebears, ensuring seamless integration into existing setups. Here’s a quick spec rundown for the stereo lineup:

Whether you’re outfitting a cozy desktop rig with the nimble 12.0i or anchoring a larger living room with the authoritative 12.4i, the series scales effortlessly. Power handling tops out at 120W for the standmounts and 175W for the towers, making them versatile partners for everything from modest integrated amps to beefier AV receivers.

Why It Matters in 2025’s Audio Landscape

In a market flooded with wireless streamers and smart speakers, the Diamond 12i’s wired, no-compromise approach feels refreshingly analog. It reminds us that true hi-fi doesn’t require deep pockets—just smart engineering. Early whispers from the audio press suggest these speakers punch even further above their weight, with enhanced dynamics that could lure fence-sitters away from pricier rivals.

For high-end aficionados dipping into budget territory or newcomers seeking a gateway drug to serious sound, the Diamond 12i series is unmissable. Wharfedale hasn’t just updated a classic—they’ve future-proofed it, proving that excellence endures. Head to wharfedale.co.uk to pre-order, and prepare to rediscover your music collection.

His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
