The VPI Avenger Direct.

The VPI Avenger Direct brings the New Jersey turntable maker’s direct-drive technology into its flagship Avenger platform, pairing a proven direct-drive motor with the modular “sandbox” chassis that has defined the Avenger range since its introduction. Built on the same Avenger Tripod Chassis as the rest of the series, the VPI Avenger Direct gives owners the freedom to mount up to three tonearms of any length or manufacturer, a level of configurability that most direct-drive decks simply do not offer.

Direct-drive heritage, Avenger flexibility

The heart of the VPI Avenger Direct comes from VPI’s proven HW-40 Anniversary Direct Drive model, housed here in an engineered, vented, and machined casing. The motor is ready to spin at the press of a button, moving between 33 and 45rpm with 2.68 Nm/sec of torque, a one-second start/stop time, and speed monitoring at 2,500 pulses per revolution for tight, consistent platter speed. The chassis itself combines aluminum with machined acrylic, topped by a 12-inch aluminum platter weighing 25 pounds, all of it built to the same exacting standard VPI applies across the Avenger series.

JMW-12 Fatboy Gimbal tonearm

Every VPI Avenger Direct ships with the JMW-12 Fatboy Gimbal tonearm, a full gimbal-bearing design with a 300mm pivot-to-spindle distance and internal Nordost Reference wire, a combination VPI has refined over several generations of the Fatboy design. Effective length is 313mm, effective mass is 12.5g, overhang is 13mm, and offset angle is 17.37 degrees, with average RMS distortion rated at 0.267 percent. The tonearm’s construction blends 3D-printed technology with epoxy resin, Delrin, copper, aluminum, and steel, and includes an adjustable drop counterweight, azimuth side weights, VTA adjustment, and a Limo connection for cartridge wiring, giving owners fine control over setup without needing separate specialty tools.

Critical acclaim

Reviewers have been enthusiastic about the VPI Avenger Direct since it arrived. Writing in Stereophile, Ken Micallef described “musical immersion” occurring “LP after LP,” noting that “the VPI played vinyl with physicality and illuminating dynamics, reproducing increments of emotion that make a musician or vocalist appear whole in your listening room.” Carlo Lo Raso of Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity put it more simply: “if there was ever a ‘Holy Grail’ of turntables, the VPI Avenger Direct would for all practical purposes be it.” The deck has also picked up recognition from HiFi News, which awarded it a place among its Bronze 100 products, further cementing its standing among reviewers across both the US and European hi-fi press.

Pricing and availability

VPI has not published current list pricing for the VPI Avenger Direct on its own site; at launch, Forbes reported a price around $35,500 for the package, though buyers should confirm current pricing and configuration options with an authorized VPI dealer, since finishes and tonearm choices affect the final cost. Available upgrades include additional tonearms, additional arm boards for third-party arms, and pneumatic air suspension feet. For VPI, the VPI Avenger Direct sits as the direct-drive flagship of a range built almost entirely around belt drive, giving vinyl listeners who prefer the speed stability of direct drive a chassis with the same three-arm flexibility that has made the wider Avenger series a reference point in its own right. See our earlier coverage of the closely related VPI HW-40, whose direct-drive motor forms the basis of this design.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
