Shanling Recasts the M8T and UA7 in Copper

Two popular models get a limited-edition full-copper chassis and a warmer house sound

Shanling has given two of its most recognisable portable audio products a striking new finish. The Shanling M8T Cu and the UA7 Cu are limited-edition copper versions of the brand’s flagship digital audio player and its popular tube-equipped dongle DAC, marking the first time Shanling has brought a full copper chassis to its audio lineup, according to Shanling’s official announcement. Internally, both models are unchanged from their aluminium counterparts, but Shanling says the added copper mass and improved shielding make the sound noticeably warmer, richer and darker in the background, with a touch more dynamics – an effect the brand describes as especially pleasing when combined with the shared tube output stage.

The Shanling M8T Cu’s New Copper Chassis

The Shanling M8T Cu takes the brand’s flagship Android-based digital audio player and rebuilds its main chassis in a solid copper alloy, finished in a rich red-copper tone and sealed under a durable anti-oxidation coating. Shanling says the copper build feels smoother in the hand and noticeably denser than the standard aluminium M8T, which shows up on the scales: 549 grams, well above the 383 grams of the regular model.

Underneath that copper shell, the specification sheet stays identical to the standard player: two JAN6418 vacuum tubes, dual AKM AK4499EX DAC chips paired with AK4191 modulators, a traditional op-amp headphone stage rated up to 1125mW into 32 ohms, and an Android 13 platform built around a Qualcomm 665 processor, with XMOS handling USB input up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD1024.

UA7 Cu Joins the Copper Lineup

The UA7 Cu applies the same treatment to Shanling’s UA7, a portable USB DAC/amp built around an ESS ES9069 DAC chip, an OPA-plus-BUF amplifier stage and its own pair of JAN6418 tubes mounted in a shock-absorbing structure. The standard UA7 already punches above its dongle-sized weight class, with up to 577mW of output into 32 ohms, a 0.87-inch OLED display for on-device settings, and support for PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit and DSD512.

In copper form, the UA7 Cu jumps from 48.5 grams to 97.4 grams – still pocketable, but noticeably denser than the aluminium version, with the same warmer, richer tonal shift Shanling describes across both copper models.

Shared Sound Character, Shared Tube Stage

Because the internal components carry over unchanged, Shanling frames the copper editions as a tuning exercise rather than a redesign. The denser copper chassis adds mass and shielding around the same circuitry used in the standard models, which the brand says lowers the noise floor and deepens the background behind the music, while adding a slight lift in dynamics.

Paired with the tube output stage already built into both devices, Shanling calls the resulting tuning one of the most pleasing combinations it has produced – a subtler upgrade than a new DAC or amplifier section, aimed at listeners who already like the house sound and want more of it.

Pricing and availability

The Shanling M8T Cu is priced at $1,999 / €2,199, a premium over the standard M8T that reflects the copper chassis and the matching limited-edition case included in the box. The UA7 Cu retails at $329 / €369; its own limited-edition case follows the same design language but is sold separately.

Shanling says both copper models will reach distributors worldwide in the second half of September 2026, with allocations expected to be limited given the nature of a copper limited-edition run.

His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
