Shanling has officially unveiled the SM90, a new flagship hi-fi streamer DAC that combines cutting-edge streaming capabilities, premium audio engineering, and a remarkably comprehensive feature set — all in a compact, modern package priced under £999.
Positioned as a true all-in-one digital hub, the SM90 looks set to challenge established rivals by delivering next-generation performance without compromise. At its core is a custom streaming platform built around a 64-bit ARM Cortex-A55 CPU, backed by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Support for both USB and internal M.2 SSD storage further expands its capacity for large local libraries.
Running on Android 12 with a newly designed, highly optimised user interface, the SM90 offers smooth, responsive operation and direct access to major streaming services including Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, and Amazon Music — all controllable via its generous 4.96-inch touchscreen.
Wireless convenience is equally well covered. The SM90 supports TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2, and DLNA, allowing effortless streaming from smartphones, tablets, and other networked devices. For local playback, it offers full NAS compatibility, external USB drive support, and an internal M.2 SSD slot, making it exceptionally versatile for both digital natives and collectors with extensive file-based libraries.
Audiophile-Grade Conversion and Analogue Performance
Sound quality remains central to Shanling’s philosophy, and the SM90 delivers with a dual AKM AK4493S DAC configuration, renowned for its rich, natural tonality. This is paired with an OPA1612-based analogue output stage for a clean, balanced presentation. Dedicated 45.1584MHz and 49.152MHz crystal oscillators minimise jitter, supporting high-resolution audio up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512.
Power supply design has also received significant attention. A linear supply featuring a 35W toroidal transformer provides clean, stable voltage — a key contributor to the analogue-like smoothness that has become a signature of Shanling products.
Extensive Connectivity for Modern and Legacy Systems
Connectivity is one of the SM90’s strongest suits. Networking options include a Gigabit LAN port and dual-band Wi-Fi 6 for rock-solid wired or wireless performance. Bluetooth 5.2 adds receiver functionality with support for LDAC, AAC, and SBC codecs.
On the rear panel, users will find a comprehensive selection of inputs: coaxial, optical, USB DAC, and HDMI ARC. Analogue outputs are offered in both RCA and balanced XLR configurations, ensuring easy integration with a wide range of amplifiers, active speakers, and existing hi-fi systems.
Premium Build in a Compact Form
Despite packing an impressive array of features, the SM90 maintains a compact footprint. It features a sleek aluminium chassis with a glass front panel, reflecting Shanling’s latest design language — elegant, durable, and visually appealing for both traditional hi-fi racks and modern living spaces.
“With its combination of advanced streaming capabilities, high-resolution audio support and thoughtfully engineered hardware, the Shanling SM90 sets a new level for streamers under £999,” the company states.
Early Verdict
Early indications suggest the SM90 could be one of the most compelling digital source components of 2025 in the competitive mid-to-high-end market. By combining a powerful Android-based streaming platform, excellent DAC implementation, robust power supply, and extensive connectivity in one well-built chassis, Shanling has created a genuine one-box solution that punches well above its price point.
