Phaze Audio Debuts the Tilia Active Bookshelf Speaker

A built-in amplifier, phono preamp and HDMI ARC bring genuine hi-fi sound to a compact bookshelf speaker

Phaze Audio Tilia Active bookshelf speakers in latte finish next to a turntable

The Phaze Audio Tilia Active is a new compact active bookshelf speaker system that combines a built-in amplifier, wireless connectivity and a phono preamp in a single pair of enclosures. Phaze Audio designed the system for listeners who want genuine hi-fi sound from turntables, TVs and phones without assembling a separate stack of components, packing power amplification, digital inputs and vinyl playback support directly into the cabinets themselves.

  • Separate drivers, dedicated channel amplification
  • A phono preamp built in
  • HDMI ARC, Bluetooth 5.2 and wired inputs
  • Four finishes to match the room
  • Pricing and availability
  • Key specifications

Separate drivers, dedicated channel amplification

Each Tilia Active cabinet houses a 4-inch woofer and a 1-inch tweeter, driven by dedicated channel amplification rated at 60W RMS (30W x 2) with 100W peak output. Phaze Audio says the separate-driver, separate-amplification approach is intended to deliver genuine hi-fi sound in a compact footprint, rather than relying on a single full-range driver as many lifestyle speakers do. Keeping the woofer and tweeter on their own amplified channels is also meant to reduce the intermodulation distortion that can creep in when a single driver tries to reproduce an entire frequency range.

A phono preamp built in

A PHONO/LINE switch and built-in phono preamp let the Tilia Active connect directly to a turntable without an outboard phono stage. Phaze Audio says the onboard preamp is substantially better than those bundled with budget turntables, for cleaner, more dynamic playback from vinyl. That makes the Tilia Active a realistic one-box starting point for a turntable-based listening setup, rather than just a desktop or TV speaker that happens to also play music.

HDMI ARC, Bluetooth 5.2 and wired inputs

An HDMI ARC input lets the Tilia Active connect directly to a television over a standard HDMI cable, working as a simpler alternative to a separate soundbar. Bluetooth 5.2 with AAC codec support covers wireless playback from a phone, tablet or TV, while an optical input and RCA line input round out the wired connections. The pair ships with a 3-metre speaker-to-speaker connecting cable, so the two cabinets can be placed with normal stereo spacing rather than sitting side by side.

Four finishes to match the room

The Tilia Active is available in four finishes: Black and Walnut for a classic look, plus Ocean Blue and Latte for a more contemporary palette. At 150 x 196-202 x 253.5mm and roughly 2.1-2.3kg per speaker, the compact cabinets are designed to sit easily on a desk, shelf or TV stand without dominating the room the way a pair of larger active monitors might.

Pricing and availability

Pricing was not listed on Phaze Audio’s product page at the time of writing; availability and regional pricing can be confirmed through the brand’s website.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
