The Phasemation PP-2200 is the successor to the PP-2000, the Japanese brand’s reference moving-coil cartridge since 2015. Phasemation has retired the PP-2000 after more than a decade in production, saying parts processing and supply had become increasingly difficult to sustain even as vinyl culture keeps growing. Rather than simply continue an aging design, Phasemation used the transition to rework the parts of the cartridge that most directly shape sound quality.
The result, the company says, is a new reference-class MC cartridge built with the same commitment to body-case design and DLC coating that has defined Phasemation’s cartridge line, but pushed further on several fronts at once.
A reworked magnetic circuit
The first area Phasemation addressed was the magnetic circuit itself. Engineers rebalanced it for more efficient power generation, which the brand says translates into greater resolution of fine musical detail and a more immersive soundstage compared with the outgoing PP-2000.
Titanium body, single-point housing
Body-case construction is a major factor in MC cartridge sound quality, and it’s where Phasemation made its biggest structural change. The housing was redesigned to consolidate contact points into a single location, with precision machining handled by Yuki Precision Co., known for its work on the high-end AP-01 turntable. The body material itself moves from duralumin to machined, DLC-coated titanium (Grade 64), which Phasemation says meaningfully reduces unwanted sound smearing versus the previous design.
Easier mounting, Japanese presentation
Phasemation also addressed a practical complaint from installers: mounting an MC cartridge without damaging delicate shell leads. The cartridge uses tapered terminals with a narrowed tip, making attachment smoother even with tighter shell leads. It ships in a new wooden presentation case reflecting the brand’s Japanese aesthetic, along with a newly included cleaning brush, and remains covered by Phasemation’s needle-exchange program.

The Phasemation PP-2200 is priced at approximately €5,500 through European distribution (Chameleon Audio), positioning it as a direct, premium-tier successor to the PP-2000 in Phasemation’s cartridge line-up. Availability will follow the brand’s usual distributor network as stock rolls out.
