Lyngdorf Audio from a technological point of view

The origin of the Lyngdorf brand and an overview of its technological developments

Behind every RoomPerfect calibration and every digital amplifier module lies a specific approach to Lyngdorf Audio technology that dates back further than the company’s official founding. In this Tech Talk, Roland Hoffmann, product marketing manager at Lyngdorf Audio and Steinway Lyngdorf, walks through the company’s origins, its underlying philosophy, and the products that define its current lineup.

The origins of Lyngdorf Audio technology

Lyngdorf Audio was founded in 2005 around TDAI amplifiers — totally digital amplifiers — and a CD player, soon followed by the company’s first loudspeaker and then the original RoomPerfect device. But the real starting point predates the company name: the iconic Millennium amplifier, widely regarded as the world’s first digital amplifier, was developed by Peter Lyngdorf and his team before 2005 under a different badge, using the same underlying digital amplification technology that would later define the TDAI range. Steinway Lyngdorf itself began at roughly the same time as a side project pursuing a completely different kind of loudspeaker. By 2015, the first home cinema processors arrived, extending RoomPerfect from stereo — where the whole story began — into multi-channel cinema for the first time.

The goal behind Lyngdorf Audio technology

Every audio company chases a version of the same goal: reproducing music as the artist or studio intended. Hoffmann argues Lyngdorf Audio technology gets closer to that goal than most because it keeps a signal in the digital domain for longer — music is already recorded and stored digitally, and every trip through the analogue domain introduces opportunities for crosstalk, distortion and noise. Combining digital amplification expertise with RoomPerfect, which addresses what happens once that signal reaches a real room, is what Hoffmann describes as the company’s route to reproducing music as faithfully as possible.

The MXA-8400 8-channel amplifier, built around Purifi amplification, is currently Lyngdorf’s technical flagship.

The current product range

Lyngdorf Audio still builds on the same foundation the company started with: fully digital TDAI amplifiers in various sizes, a dedicated SDA power amplifier, and — somewhat surprisingly given the streaming era — a CD player, because CD replay remains popular in several key markets when done properly. The home cinema side centres on the MP-40 and MP-60 multi-channel processors, decoding up to 16 channels with Dolby, DTS:X and Auro support, built around RoomPerfect and genuinely capable audio components. The most recent addition is the MXA-8400, an 8-channel cinema amplifier built on Purifi amplification technology. On the loudspeaker side, the range spans lifestyle and on-wall speakers such as the FR-2, designed for discreet wall placement, alongside a dedicated custom-installation speaker programme.

Current highlights: the MXA-8400 and Q100

Asked to name a current highlight, Hoffmann points first to the MXA-8400, which he considers a genuine benchmark — not only in how good a power amplifier can sound, but in how good one can measure, a milestone he sees as significant for the amplifier industry as a whole, not just for Lyngdorf. His second pick, the Q100 loudspeaker, reflects his own background in speaker design: even with drivers, cones and tweeters that haven’t fundamentally changed in decades, the Q100 — built around a Purifi driver combined with Lyngdorf’s own AMT tweeter — represents another genuine step forward in how close a two-way design can get to the original recording.

Why buy into Lyngdorf Audio technology?

Hoffmann’s answer is simple: getting as close as possible to the original sound. Some listeners worry that digital components, or a calibration system like RoomPerfect, pull a system away from a warmer analogue character — but Hoffmann’s counter is that better-engineered components sound better regardless of domain, and that closing the gap to the original recording is what actually produces a more exciting, engaging listening experience, whatever technology gets you there.

Frequently asked questions

When was Lyngdorf Audio founded, and what came before it?

Lyngdorf Audio was officially founded in 2005 around TDAI digital amplifiers, but the underlying technology traces back to the Millennium amplifier — widely regarded as the world’s first digital amplifier — developed by Peter Lyngdorf and his team before the company existed under that name.

What is the current flagship of Lyngdorf Audio technology?

According to Roland Hoffmann, the MXA-8400 8-channel power amplifier, built on Purifi amplification technology, currently sets a benchmark both for how good a power amplifier can sound and how well it measures.

What products does Lyngdorf Audio currently offer?

TDAI digital amplifiers in multiple sizes, the SDA power amplifier, a CD player, MP-40 and MP-60 home cinema processors with RoomPerfect, the MXA-8400 multi-channel amplifier, and a loudspeaker range including lifestyle, on-wall, and custom-installation models such as the FR-2.

How does Lyngdorf Audio technology aim to preserve the original recording?

By keeping the signal in the digital domain for as long as possible, since music is already recorded digitally, and by combining that digital amplification approach with RoomPerfect room calibration to address what happens once the signal reaches a real listening room.

Is Lyngdorf Audio the same company as Steinway Lyngdorf?

They’re related but distinct: Lyngdorf Audio is the original digital amplification and loudspeaker brand founded in 2005, while Steinway Lyngdorf is a separate joint venture with Steinway & Sons that began shortly afterward, focused on a different range of loudspeakers.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
