This is especially true for moving coil cartridges, which produce incredibly faint signals sometimes as low as 50 nanovolts that require amplification of over 90 dB to be usable.

Peter van Willenswaard’s approach to the PW1, affectionately called the “Phono Wizard,” emphasizes achieving a harmonious balance rather than merely minimizing distortion. His goal was to develop a solid-state preamp that rivals the sound quality of his best tube-based designs.
