Cayin Tunes Up the HA-1A MK3 Tube Headphone Amplifier

A third-generation single-ended Class A design adds balanced XLR output and switchable impedance matching to Cayin's compact desktop tube amp

Cayin HA-1A MK3

Cayin has fine-tuned its longest-running desktop headphone amplifier for a third time. The Cayin HA-1A MK3 keeps the single-ended Class A tube circuit that built the HA-1A’s reputation, but pairs it with a balanced 4-pin XLR headphone output, switchable impedance matching and a dedicated preamp stage that earlier versions lacked. Hand-wired point-to-point and fitted with a protective tube cage, the Cayin HA-1A MK3 is built for listeners who want real vacuum-tube warmth without stepping up to Cayin’s larger HA-300 MK3 or HA-6A MK2 models. It went on sale in China on 9 September 2026, ahead of a German retail launch on 14 September.

Inside the Cayin HA-1A MK3’s Tube Circuit

At the heart of the amplifier sit two JJ 12AU7/ECC82 tubes handling voltage gain and two Electro-Harmonix EL84EH/6BQ5 tubes running the power stage in single-ended Class A, a configuration prized by tube fans for smooth harmonics and dense, three-dimensional tonal character. Cayin developed dedicated output transformers specifically for this model, aiming to preserve tonal purity and drive capability rather than reusing a generic off-the-shelf part.

The power supply follows the same philosophy: the voltage and power stages each get their own separate supply rail, and the output stage adds a high-voltage regulated supply to keep noise down and dynamics intact. A turn-on mute circuit and a roughly 50-second delayed start protect connected headphones, while internal shielding between sections and a metal tube cage round out a design built for daily use rather than just showroom demos — a similarly hand-built ethos to more affordable tube designs like the FiiO EA13 tube amplifier.

Balanced Output, Impedance Matching and Preamp Duties

The Cayin HA-1A MK3 offers both a 6.35mm single-ended headphone jack and a 4-pin XLR balanced output, delivering 2,500mW plus 2,500mW unbalanced and 2,800mW plus 2,800mW balanced — enough headroom for most planar and dynamic headphones on the market. A front-panel switch toggles between Low (8-150 ohm) and High (151-600 ohm) impedance matching, letting owners optimise gain and damping for anything from easy-to-drive dynamics to demanding high-impedance audiophile cans. Beyond headphone duties, the amplifier doubles as a tube preamplifier: a rear RCA input feeds the circuit, and a dedicated PREAMP RCA output sends a 9dB-gain, 5V-capable signal onward to a power amplifier or active speakers, with frequency response quoted at 20Hz-24kHz (±3dB) and a headphone signal-to-noise ratio of 110dB.

The Cayin HA-1A MK3’s Build and Finish

Measuring 240 x 240 x 140mm and weighing 8.8kg, the Cayin HA-1A MK3 is compact enough for a desktop but substantial enough to feel like a proper component. Cayin offers the chassis in silver or black front-panel finishes, both paired with the same dark-grey transformer housing and exposed, glowing tube array that has become the HA-series’ visual signature. Point-to-point hand-wiring inside the chassis reflects Cayin’s broader approach to its tube amplifiers, prioritising serviceability and sonic consistency over automated assembly.

Pricing and availability

The Cayin HA-1A MK3 launched in China on 9 September 2026 and arrives in Germany on 14 September through Cayin’s own online store, priced at €1,298 including German VAT in silver or black. Cayin says the amplifier is ready for international rollout and will follow through its network of authorised distributors and dealers worldwide in the coming weeks. Full specifications and ordering details are available on the official Cayin HA-1A MK3 product page.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
