Emotiva Audio has officially released the XSP-2 Differential Reference Stereo Preamplifier, a significant update to its popular XSP-1 model. Priced at an accessible $1,599, the new preamp combines high-end analog performance with modern connectivity and modular expandability, making it one of the most versatile options in the high-end audio market today.
Fully Balanced Design with Advanced Bass Management
At its core, the Emotiva XSP-2 is a fully differential, fully balanced analog stereo control center. This design minimizes noise and preserves signal integrity, delivering lifelike vocals, tight bass response, and effortless dynamics that audiophiles demand.
A standout feature is the fully balanced bass management system supporting 2.1 and 2.2 channel configurations. Users can select high-pass and low-pass crossovers at 40, 60, 80, or 100 Hz, with options for stereo or summed mono subwoofer outputs. This makes the XSP-2 an excellent hub for systems that blend high-performance two-channel audio with subtle low-frequency extension.
Rich Analog Connectivity and Convenience Features
Emotiva continues its tradition of practicality with the XSP-2. It includes a high-quality built-in MM/MC phono stage, allowing direct connection of turntables without external preamps. A dedicated headphone amplifier utilizing current-mode feedback topology is included, capable of driving even demanding headphones with authority and clarity.
Additional system integration features include an external processor loop and Home Theater Bypass, ensuring seamless operation in mixed two-channel and multi-channel setups. Whether paired with high-end power amplifiers or integrated into a home theater environment, the XSP-2 serves as a flexible command center.
ESS-Based DAC Module and Modular Expansion
The XSP-2 ships with a factory-installed, fully balanced ESS-based DAC module that adds essential modern digital inputs: HDMI-ARC, USB, coaxial, and optical. Careful shielding keeps the digital circuitry isolated from the pure analog signal path, maintaining the preamp’s renowned sonic purity.
Two rear-panel expansion slots provide true future-proofing. Emotiva has already confirmed that a streamer module is in development and will be easily user-installable when released. This modular approach allows owners to adapt the preamp to evolving audio technologies without replacing the entire unit.
Emotiva’s Vision for the XSP-2
Dan Laufman, President of Emotiva Audio Corporation, commented on the new model:
“The XSP-1 is one of the most popular products in the history of the brand. It’s famous for being a highly flexible preamp that performs well above its price. After years of focused R&D, we’re finally ready to launch a worthy successor that retains the sonic benefits that made the original a hit, but with added flexibility across the board.”
He added:
“The XSP-2 is not only a best-in-class preamp for today’s consumers, but it’s also ready for whatever comes next, including a streamer module that is currently in the works. When it launches, all it will take is a few easy steps to add it to the XSP-2.”
Why the Emotiva XSP-2 Matters in 2026
In a market filled with expensive flagship preamplifiers, the Emotiva XSP-2 stands out by delivering reference-level balanced performance, comprehensive connectivity, and genuine upgradeability at a realistic price point. Its combination of analog excellence and digital convenience positions it as an ideal choice for both purists and enthusiasts building versatile high-end systems.
