Welcome to ‘First look’, kind of a cross-over between an unboxing and a review. Today we’ll be initiating a seismic event thanks to the SVS SB-17 Ultra R|Evolution.

Kind of product?

The SVS SB-17 Ultra is a high-performance sealed subwoofer designed to deliver powerful, precise, and deep bass for home audio systems. Like the product type indicates, it features a 17-inch high-excursion driver extending low frequencies down to 15 Hz, offering both cinematic impact and musical nuance with exceptional control.

Brand?

SVS, or SV Sound, is a prominent American brand known for high-performance audio equipment, especially subwoofers and speakers. Established in 1998, the company is praised for its exceptional sound quality, innovative designs, and affordability. Catering to both home theater enthusiasts and audiophiles, SVS employs advanced technologies like ported and sealed designs for enhanced bass. Their diverse product lineup includes bookshelf speakers, floor standing speakers, and subwoofers. SVS is also recognized for excellent customer service and engaging users in product development through feedback.

Current price?

The actual European price for the SVS SB-17 Ultra R|Evolution is 3.549 euro. In America the subwoofer is listed at 2,499 US dollars.

What’s in the box?

First off, it’s a big box, measuring 630mm x 633mm x 757mm. Wanna know the weight? A shipping weight of 61.7Kg and an unboxed weight of 56.25Kg. We had quite the unboxing party. We have no images of that. Sorry. In the box you’ll find the subwoofer, power cord, grille and a registration card.

Closer look?

The 17-inch glass fiber composite cone with SVS logo on it really dominates the front view. In the 4 corners you can find the holes to attach the grille. If you look close enough you can see 2 small rubber feet that help carry the weight and keep the sub in position while in operation.

In the middle of the back, we find a rectangle module that contains all connections and physical control functions. From top to bottom: a tiny display, 3 menu control buttons (up, down and select), a USB-A socket that functions as a SVS Soundpatch Wireless Audio Adapter, trigger input, IR output, 2 RCA line level inputs with LFE channel, balanced XLR in- and outputs, power switch and power socket.

Features?

The SVS SB17-Ultra R|Evolution subwoofer boasts a 17-inch high-excursion driver with dual 8-inch voice coils, powered by a 2800W RMS dual mono-block Class-D amplifier with MOSFET output stages. It delivers precise bass down to 15Hz, managed by a 295MHz Analog Devices DSP. The SVS Subwoofer Control Smartphone App offers the most convenient way to control all DSP functions, including volume, 6-band parametric EQ, low pass filter, phase, polarity, room gain, system settings, custom presets and auto room EQ. Features include a lightweight, rigid cone, a 25Kg toroidal ferrite motor, and a catenary SBR rubber surround for flawless motion. The sealed double thick MDF cabinet and rigid internal bracing ensures resonance-free sound. Additional perks: a switch-mode power supply for consistent performance, all in a sleek Piano Gloss Black or Black Oak finish.

For whom is this product?

The SVS SB-17 Ultra subwoofer delivers powerful, high-quality bass in a compact design, perfect for audio enthusiasts and home theater users. It enhances music, movies, and gaming experiences with advanced technology and customization options, making it suitable for both casual listeners and audiophiles, fitting seamlessly into various room sizes and setups.

First impression?

Finally, I can enjoy the low frequencies I’ve always dreamed of. Utilizing a pair of the SVS SB-17 Ultra’s I can lay an exceptional musical foundation. Stay on the look-out for when our full review gets published.

Marco Lisi is the publisher of Best of High End, part of AV Concepts BV. His path into audio started early: as a teenager he was drawn into the world of free radio, presenting shows and living immersed in music every day. In his early twenties he ran his own production studio for five years, creating jingles and commercials — hands-on training in sound design, pro-audio workflows, and critical listening through studio monitors that still shapes how he evaluates gear today. He also spent years DJing in clubs before moving into publishing, first at two earlier online magazines before founding Best of High End. His hi-fi and home cinema passion was inherited from his father, an inveterate system-swapper. Marco's first setup — a confirmation gift — paired AKAI separates with entry-level Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a brand he stayed loyal to for years as his system grew from stereo into full surround and home cinema. Like many enthusiasts, he went through an extended "audiophile" phase chasing the next upgrade, before settling into a more grounded view: gear as a means to enjoy music and film, not an end in itself. Years of critical listening have given him a well-trained ear — the ability to characterize a system or pinpoint a change in the chain quickly and accurately. Just as important, his teaching background (a Belgian "regent" degree in Dutch language) gives him the tools to translate those listening impressions into clear, readable writing.
