Cayin, the renowned Chinese audio specialist known for its high-fidelity digital and analog gear, has launched the RU3, a pint-sized portable DAC and headphone amplifier that packs a punch in both performance and portability. Designed for discerning listeners who demand studio-quality sound from their mobile setups, the RU3 stands out with its innovative all-to-DSD upsampling technology, making it a compelling upgrade for smartphone, laptop, or DAP users seeking refined, analog-like playback.
At the heart of the RU3 is the flagship Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC chip, celebrated for its exceptional signal-to-noise ratio and low distortion. This single-chip solution delivers native decoding of PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD up to 512x, ensuring compatibility with the highest-resolution files available. What sets the RU3 apart is Cayin’s proprietary “All-to-DSD” mode, which upsamples all incoming PCM signals to DSD256 or DSD512 in real-time. This process aims to preserve the natural warmth and detail of DSD recordings, offering a more fluid and immersive listening experience that bridges the gap between digital precision and vinyl-esque smoothness.
The amplifier section employs a fully balanced circuit design, providing robust output power of 400mW per channel at 32 ohms via the 4.4mm balanced output—plenty of drive for demanding planar and high-impedance headphones. For single-ended users, the 3.5mm output delivers 160mW at the same load. With a low output impedance of just 0.3 ohms (balanced) and 0.7 ohms (single-ended), the RU3 maintains tight control over a wide range of headphones, from sensitive IEMs to power-hungry over-ears. Frequency response spans 20Hz to 50kHz (-0.5dB), with THD+N below 0.0004% and dynamic range exceeding 130dB, underscoring its audiophile-grade transparency.
Portability is paramount with the RU3’s sleek aluminum chassis, measuring a mere 42 x 24 x 12mm and weighing only 18g—small enough to clip onto a keychain or slip into a pocket. A built-in 200mAh battery offers up to 18 hours of playback in PCM mode or 12 hours in All-to-DSD, rechargeable via USB-C in about 1.5 hours. Connectivity is straightforward: USB-C input for digital audio from any source, with plug-and-play support for iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac devices (no drivers needed for most). The included short USB-C cable and leather case add to the premium unboxing experience.
The RU3 is our answer to audiophiles who refuse to compromise on sound quality during travel, states a Cayin representative. With All-to-DSD, we’re bringing the magic of DSD to every track, everywhere.
Available in a striking silver finish, the RU3 emphasizes Cayin’s commitment to accessible high-end audio. Priced competitively at around $129 USD (depending on region), it undercuts many rivals while delivering flagship-level features.
