FiiO has unveiled its latest digital audio player, the M33 R2R, marking the brand’s first portable device to feature a fully discrete resistor-ladder (R2R) DAC architecture. Positioned below the flagship M27, this mid-range Android-based DAP combines the warm, natural tonality associated with R2R conversion with modern performance, substantial output power, and everyday usability – all at a competitive price point of approximately $600.
At the heart of the M33 R2R is FiiO’s in-house developed 24-bit fully differential complementary R2R resistor array, designed to deliver an analog-like presentation emphasizing accuracy, dynamic realism, and musical cohesion. Unlike conventional delta-sigma DACs, the discrete R2R approach uses precisely matched resistors for superior linearity, resulting in a smoother, more organic sound signature that audiophiles often describe as closer to vinyl or tube amplification.
Impressive analog section
The analog section is no less impressive, featuring a multi-stage topology with eight high-precision Texas Instruments operational amplifiers. This setup provides exceptional control and clean amplification, culminating in 1100mW + 1100mW of output power from the 4.4mm balanced headphone jack (at 32 ohms) and 470mW from the 3.5mm single-ended output. The player easily drives everything from sensitive in-ear monitors to demanding full-size over-ear headphones.
Signal purity is maintained through an independent XMOS XU316 USB processor and FiiO’s proprietary DAPS (Digital Audio Purification System) – technology derived from the flagship M27 – which minimizes jitter and suppresses noise for a cleaner signal path.
Android 13
Running Android 13 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 processor, the M33 R2R is equipped with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD. This ensures smooth multitasking, support for streaming apps, and ample space for high-resolution local libraries. A vibrant 5.5-inch HD touchscreen offers intuitive navigation, while a 4400mAh battery promises up to 14 hours of playback (single-ended) or 12.5 hours (balanced).
Desktop mode
Additional features include a patented Desktop Mode that unlocks higher power when connected to external charging, effectively transforming the portable player into a compact desktop DAC/amp. The slim, lightweight chassis (258g, thinner and lighter than the predecessor M23) is available in colors such as Dark Blue and Titanium Gold.
FiiO’s ongoing push into R2R technology – seen in desktop units like the K11 R2R and K13 R2R – now extends to portability without compromise. The M33 R2R fills a gap in the market for affordable yet authentic R2R portable players, competing directly with higher-priced alternatives while offering greater power and Android flexibility.
The FiiO M33 R2R is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2026, with initial availability in China starting in January. For high-end portable audio enthusiasts seeking the emotional engagement of R2R sound in a versatile, powerful package, the M33 R2R sets a compelling new standard.
