Austrian hi-fi specialist Pro-Ject Audio Systems has introduced the CD Box RS2 Tube, the latest addition to its prestigious RS2 reference series. This high-end device combines a precision CD transport with an integrated high-quality DAC and a fully balanced vacuum tube output stage, offering audiophiles a versatile solution that bridges digital accuracy with analog warmth.
Priced at €1,900 (approximately £1,749 or $2,300), the CD Box RS2 Tube is available now in elegant silver or black full-aluminum chassis finishes. Handcrafted in Europe, it builds on the legacy of Pro-Ject’s acclaimed CD Box RS2 T transport while adding significant upgrades, including an onboard Texas Instruments PCM1796 DAC in fully differential configuration and a sophisticated tube buffer stage featuring two premium E88CC valves.
Top-loading Red Book CD mechanism
At its heart lies the new SUOS DM-3381 top-loading Red Book CD mechanism, paired with Pro-Ject’s advanced BlueTiger™ CD-88 servo system for exceptionally low jitter, precise tracking, and reliable data extraction—even from challenging discs. The gravity-centered design, magnetic puck clamp, and rigid aluminum structure minimize vibrations, ensuring bit-perfect readout.
Balanced tube output
What sets the CD Box RS2 Tube apart is its dual personality: it functions as a pure CD transport via coaxial and optical S/PDIF digital outputs for use with external DACs, or as a complete CD player with direct analog connections. The fully balanced tube output stage enriches the signal post-DAC with the characteristic harmonic richness, fluidity, and natural timbre of vacuum tubes, available through both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs.
User-friendly features
User-friendly features include a large LCD display showing track information and CD-text, front-panel controls, and a supplied full-aluminum infrared remote. The unit is compatible with Pro-Ject’s optional Power Box RS2 Sources linear power supply for further performance enhancements, while its external 20V DC supply keeps electrical noise at bay.
Measuring a compact 206 x 84 x 200 mm and weighing 3.2 kg (without power supply), the CD Box RS2 Tube fits seamlessly into premium hi-fi systems. Power consumption is rated at 20W maximum, dropping to under 0.5W in standby.
In an era of renewed interest in physical media, Pro-Ject’s latest flagship reaffirms the CD format’s potential for audiophile-grade playback. By blending cutting-edge digital engineering with classic tube sonics, the CD Box RS2 Tube delivers emotional, engaging sound that honors the silver disc’s lossless heritage—making it a compelling choice for collectors and music lovers seeking reference-level performance from their CD collections.
