Sony has announced that it is developing an innovative display system that utilizes independently controlled RGB LEDs and a high-density LED backlight. This system allows users to control the three primary colors Red (R), Green (G), and Blue (B) individually, even at large screen sizes. This results in unparalleled color purity and vibrant images with a wide color gamut.

Enhanced Colors and Brightness

This new display system offers a broader color range and higher brightness, leading to richer color representation and subtle details across the entire brightness spectrum. Thanks to Sony’s advanced backlight control technology, color nuances and light gradations are displayed with high precision, even at the corners of large screens. This technology is crucial for cinematic productions, where color, blacks, and light gradations are essential for conveying narrative expression.

Support for Creators

For years, Sony has focused on supporting creators with professional monitors used for color correction in video production. With this new development, Sony builds on its unique experience and technical expertise. Production of this system is scheduled for 2025, aiming to expand its integration into consumer televisions and displays for content creation.

Key Features of the Display System

In 2004, Sony introduced the world’s first LCD television with a full-array RGB LED backlight. Since then, the company has continuously improved its technology. Some of the key features of the new display system include:

Wide Color Gamut

The system offers independent color representation with more than 99% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut and approximately 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 standard. This ensures unique image quality, with subtle color nuances displayed optimally.

Dynamic Brightness

The innovative backlight control technology allows brightness to be dynamically adjusted based on the scene. This means that not only bright elements like stars or the moon are enhanced, but also even colors such as a deep blue sky or vibrant autumn leaves are displayed bright and vivid. The system can achieve a peak brightness of over 4000 cd/m², a record in Sony’s display technology history.

Wider Dynamic Range

With a high bit rate of 96 bits, the system can display both deep blacks and bright whites simultaneously. This allows for precise representation of subtle differences in brightness and color, even from different viewing angles.

Accurate Color Representation

The system’s special control processor ensures that bright areas are displayed vibrantly without losing white details, while dark areas are subtly illuminated. This system has about twice the computing power and pixel correction technology compared to traditional local dimming processing, resulting in accurate color reproduction without color deviations.

Collaboration with Technology Suppliers

Sony is collaborating with MediaTek Inc. for the development of control processors, and with ROHM Co., Ltd. for the development of LED driver ICs. The company is also working with Sanan Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. for the development of LEDs. These collaborations are essential for realizing the advanced technologies that support the new display system.

Future of Visual Display

Sony continues to innovate and enhance the possibilities of visual display while working with creators on the future of entertainment. This new display system promises to be a significant step forward in the world of imaging technology, with applications ranging from film production to home entertainment.

I made short movies with my stuffed animals as a kid, since then I knew from a young age I wanted to be a videographer. My parents always said I had a great eye for video/photo, so I made my job out of it. Now I make professional corporate video's. I love to learn all about new gadgets and electronics that come to the market, that's why I write/edit for "Best Of High End".
