MSB Technology, a leader in high-end audio innovation, has officially announced the Sentinel DAC, a groundbreaking digital-to-analog converter that redefines the boundaries of audio fidelity. Described as their “magnum opus,” the Sentinel DAC is the result of a collaborative effort by CEO Jonathan Gullman, Circuit Designer Dustin Symanski, and Industrial Designer Daniel Francis, whose shared vision has produced a system that promises an unparalleled listening experience for discerning audiophiles.
Three-chassis marvel
The Sentinel DAC is a three-chassis marvel comprising the Digital Director, Analog Converter, and Power Supply, each meticulously designed to optimize performance. Guided by the mantra “performance above all,” the system employs complex 3D layouts to minimize bloat while enhancing electronic interactions. Its sleek, matte exterior hides the intricate engineering within, achieved through a close partnership between mechanical, electrical, and software designers. This harmony has resulted in a product that not only delivers uncompromising sound but also sets a new standard for industrial design with precision-machined billet components and micro-level details crafted using advanced 5-axis machining.
Innovative DAC technology
At the heart of the Sentinel DAC lies its innovative technology. The Analog Converter features 32 Hybrid DAC MKII modules—quadrupling the eight modules found in MSB’s earlier designs—delivering unmatched signal accuracy. The system introduces Bit Diffusion Technology, pioneered by Symanski, which leverages the 32 parallel DAC channels to diffuse low-level noise and digital artifacts, resulting in a holographic soundstage and fatigue-free listening. The Sentinel Clock, a custom-designed, ovenized crystal developed with a crystal wafer manufacturer, achieves unprecedented precision, requiring a tuned, isolated energy dispersion platform to manage its sensitivity.
The Digital Director handles all digital processing, featuring a large, readable display and intuitive controls for seamless user interaction. It outputs signals via fully isolated fiber optic Sentinel-Links to the Analog Converter’s Dual Mono DACs, ensuring pristine analog conversion free from digital interference. The Sentinel Power Supply, with three independent power modules, provides clean power to the left and right Mono DACs and an ultra-low-noise supply for the Sentinel Clock, further enhancing performance.
MSB’s commitment to innovation didn’t stop at audio performance. The Sentinel DAC’s development, spanning years, led to breakthroughs that have already influenced other MSB products, such as the Digital Director and Cascade DAC. The system’s modular design ensures future-proofing, with user-upgradable components like the Sentinel Clock, keeping it at the cutting edge of audio technology.
Upcoming Sentinel Amp
Currently in development, the Sentinel Amp will complement the DAC, featuring a unique Confluence connection to harness the DAC’s low-output impedance and vast power, preserving delicate details while boosting dynamics. Both the DAC and Amp will include XLR inputs and outputs for versatile system integration.
Priced at approximately $375,000, the Sentinel DAC is a rarefied offering for those whose passion for music demands the absolute best. MSB advises placing the system in a well-ventilated space, away from direct sunlight, with each chassis on a separate shelf to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
This is more than engineering; it’s an obsession, MSB states, emphasizing their dedication to sound that is untouched, uncolored, and undeniably real. With the Sentinel DAC, MSB Technology has crafted a masterpiece that bridges the gap between artist and listener, setting a new benchmark for high-end audio.
