The Graham Engineering Phantom III tonearm has made its mark in the audiophile community, promising unparalleled performance that takes listening experiences to an entirely new level. Building upon the foundation of the highly acclaimed Phantom II, the Phantom III introduces several significant enhancements, particularly in its arm wand, internal wiring, and bearing housing design. As a result, this innovative tonearm is not just an upgrade; it’s a leap forward in audio fidelity.

Setting New Standards in Audio Performance

Graham Engineering’s Phantom III has not only met but has exceeded the lofty expectations set by its predecessor. Early tests and feedback from users indicate that this tonearm stands in a class of its own, outstripping even the highly regarded Phantom II. It is quickly becoming apparent that the Phantom III delivers performance that is altogether higher than other tonearms currently available on the market.

Design Evolution: Internal Improvements

At first glance, the Phantom III may appear similar to the original Phantom and the Series II. However, it is the internal modifications that set it apart. The tonearm features a refined Magneglide™ stabilizer, new internal wiring designed for enhanced detail retrieval, and improved freedom from mechanical resistance. The upgraded pivot design contributes to dynamic range improvements, while the introduction of a new titanium arm wand promises even greater performance.

A key innovation in the Phantom III is the new pivot housing assembly. This assembly utilizes a constrained layer combination of brass and tungsten, which enhances energy control and damping capabilities, leading to superior bearing performance. The arm’s slightly reshaped counterweight accommodates a wider range of cartridge weights, resulting in a lower moment of inertia. The cumulative effect of these refinements translates into greater transparency, expanded soundstaging, and a significant increase in bass impact and extension.

Achieving Stable Balance: An Engineering Marvel

One of the standout features of the Phantom III is its Stable Balance design, which ensures consistent tracking force across both vertical and lateral planes. This is a critical measurement for audiophiles, as it guarantees that the tracking force remains stable even when the tonearm is lifted above the record surface.

In contrast to traditional unipivot designs that utilize side weights for lateral stability, which can lead to inconsistent tracking and increased record wear, the Phantom III employs a more sophisticated approach. The Magneglide™ system, which utilizes powerful neodymium magnets, provides lateral stability while allowing for true Neutral Balance. This unique system minimizes friction and eliminates unwanted wobbling, ensuring that the tonearm maintains its alignment and tracking accuracy even as it traverses warped records.

The Importance of Geometric Precision

A critical aspect of tonearm design is maintaining the correct geometric alignment of the stylus. The Phantom III’s ability to pivot in the correct vertical plane of the stylus tip is a game-changer. Regular unipivots often struggle with this, leading to channel imbalance and reduced tracking accuracy. Thanks to the dual-damped system in the Phantom III, the tonearm can pivot smoothly while maintaining the correct angle, ensuring that the cartridge performs optimally.

I made short movies with my stuffed animals as a kid, since then I knew from a young age I wanted to be a videographer. My parents always said I had a great eye for video/photo, so I made my job out of it. Now I make professional corporate video's. I love to learn all about new gadgets and electronics that come to the market, that's why I write/edit for "Best Of High End".
