Closer Acoustics, a Polish audio innovator with over a decade of expertise in wide-band driver-based loudspeakers, has launched its groundbreaking Blocks modular speaker system. This new offering, designed to adapt to individual preferences, room acoustics, and amplifier types, introduces a fresh approach to high-fidelity sound. Building on the success of familiar models like the OGY and BOB (Bass Open Baffle) bass modules, the system welcomes a new star: the OKHO.
The Blocks system is a testament to Closer Acoustics’ commitment to flexibility and performance. At its heart is the OKHO, a wide-band speaker featuring a 12-inch EMS driver with 97.5 dB efficiency and a 34Hz resonant frequency, mounted in a U-shaped open baffle. This contrasts with the OGY, a 4-inch driver with 91 dB efficiency and a 50Hz resonant frequency housed in a 1-meter tapered transmission line. The OKHO delivers a relaxed, full-bodied sound with a rich midrange, while the OGY excels in speed, detail, and holographic 3D imaging. Both can be seamlessly paired with BOB bass modules, tuned to complement either driver.
The modular design revolves around stackable blocks—OKHO or OGY, BOBs, and a new “Blank” (a voided BOB cabinet)—all uniform in size. A basic setup might include a Blank base, a BOB, and an OKHO on top, with the option to swap positions or add a second BOB for enhanced bass. Unlike traditional subwoofers, the open-baffle BOBs avoid boomy resonance, instead providing a subtle boost between 40 and 200 Hz. This reinforces the low-end foundation without overwhelming smaller rooms, a nuance honed through years of customer feedback.
Configurations abound: Blank-BOB-OKHO, Blank-BOB-OKHO-BOB, or even Blank-BOB-BOB-OKHO for larger spaces with distant listening positions (4-6 meters). Each setup alters the bass presentation, letting users tailor the sound to their taste and environment. Anti-vibration platforms with ISO Acoustics GAIA II footers ensure stability, while brass pins prevent slippage between blocks.
To bridge the efficiency gap between OKHO and OGY, Closer Acoustics employs Polish-made Pathaudio resistors (±1% tolerance) in a constant impedance circuit, attenuable via direct driver connections if needed. The upgraded BOB MK II now features individual high-grade inductance coils per driver, pure copper binding posts, and 9.5 AWG Cardas copper wiring. Custom Cardas jumpers with rhodium-plated spades connect the blocks, and acoustically transparent cloth shields against dust—a nod to customer input.
