Let’s take a closer look at the JICO original Moving Magnet (MM) cartridge: the “Clipper,”. Headquartered in Mikata District, Hyogo Prefecture, and led by President Yukihiro Nakagawa, JICO has been a cornerstone in the world of audio for nearly six decades, specializing in high-quality record needles.
A Vision for the Future
Since commencing operations in 1966, JICO has evolved from producing replacement needles to becoming a key player in the analog audio industry. The company’s commitment to quality has been evident, especially following the withdrawal of SHURE from the phono cartridge market in 2018. JICO quickly adapted by replicating the SHURE 44 series cartridge and its replacement needle, showcasing its dedication to keeping the spirit of analog audio alive.
Despite the challenges posed by the digital revolution, JICO has remained steadfast in its mission. The resurgence of vinyl records in the 2020s has provided a renewed opportunity for the company to innovate. JICO aims to transition from a mere replacement needle manufacturer to a complete cartridge producer, ensuring the future of analog audio remains bright.
The Meaning Behind “Clipper”
The journey to create the Clipper cartridge began in 2021, shortly after the launch of the SHURE 44 replica. JICO embarked on a quest to define the “JICO Sound,” venturing into uncharted territory with the development of an original MM cartridge. This endeavor sparked a series of collaborative discussions, culminating in a vision that reflects the unique natural environment of the San’in region, where the JICO factory resides.
The name “Clipper” draws inspiration from Pan American Airways, which pioneered the concept of business class travel in the mid-20th century. This choice reflects JICO’s aspiration to deliver a product that offers a superior quality experience compared to standard, mass-market cartridges.
Versatility and Compatibility
One of the standout features of the Clipper is its compatibility with SHURE’s 44 stylus. During development, JICO’s team experimented with various replacement needles, including their own ND (NUDE) tip, SD (Synthetic Diamond) tip, and even vintage SHURE needles. This versatility promises an array of sound possibilities, allowing audiophiles to tailor their listening experience to their preferences.
Innovative Design Elements
The Clipper cartridge incorporates a tapered S-cantilever design, a concept previously adopted by AUDIO EMPIRE and SWING record needles. This innovative design minimizes mass at the tip, enhancing vibration reproduction for a more powerful sound. By marrying this design with JICO’s proprietary ND tip, the Clipper cartridge delivers exceptional clarity and detail, particularly in the mid-to-high frequency ranges.
Additionally, the Clipper features the ApexGlide headshell, which reimagines traditional design elements. The finger lift is strategically positioned along the cartridge’s centerline, optimizing balance and ergonomics. The unique rounded body shape, paired with a sharp, angular finger lift design, evokes a sense of style and speed, reminiscent of aviation aesthetics.
