Alright, buckle up, because we’re diving into the beast that is the SVS SB17-Ultra R|Evolution subwoofer. This thing is straight out of the bass cellar, where the SVS crew has been cooking up audio magic for years. Two of these bad boys landed in my setup, and I’ve been grinning like a kid with a new toy ever since. I’m not here to bore you with techy details just yet nah, this intro’s all about the feels. Imagine kicking back, popping on your favorite action flick, and suddenly your couch is shaking like you’re dodging explosions. Or spinning some chill tracks and feeling the bass hug you like an old friend. That’s the magic these subs bring.
SVS has this knack for making gear that doesn’t just play sound it delivers it, right to your core. I’ve had them thumping for days now, and my neighbors probably hate me, but I’m too busy having a blast to care. It’s not just about loudness it’s got this sneaky way of getting into every corner of the room, making everything sound bigger, richer, alive. Whether I’m gaming, binge-watching, or just messing around with playlists, these things constantly catch my attention.
So, yeah, I’m stoked to dive into this review and spill the tea on what it’s like living with a couple of SVS SB17-Ultra’s. Spoiler alert: it’s like having a mini earthquake in your living room in the best way possible. So, let’s get into it: here’s my take on what makes the SB17-Ultra a total game-changer for anyone obsessed with sound/bass.
SVSOUND OR SIMPLY SVS?
SVSOUND, commonly known as SVS, is a premier audio brand headquartered in Youngstown, Ohio, dedicated to delivering exceptional home audio experiences. Founded with a mission to make high-quality sound accessible to all, SVS specializes in crafting world-class speakers, subwoofers, and audio accessories that blend cutting-edge technology with affordability. Under the leadership of President and CEO Gary Yacoubian, the company has earned a reputation as one of the top subwoofer brands globally, celebrated for its powerful, precise bass and immersive sound. With a passion for innovation and a commitment to customer engagement, SVS continues to redefine performance and value in the audio industry.
WHERE’S THE R I EVOLUTION?
SVS has redefined the sealed subwoofer category with the SVS SB17Ultra R|Evolution. Designed and built in the US, this flagship model showcases the brand’s commitment to delivering reference-grade bass with unmatched precision and power. At its core is a groundbreaking 17-inch high-excursion driver, featuring dual 8-inch voice coils a world-first innovation. This massive driver, paired with a dual-mono STA-2800D Class-D amplifier, unleashes 2,800 watts RMS and over 6,000 watts peak power, effortlessly producing deep, room-shaking bass down to 15 Hz, far below the threshold of human hearing.
The SVS SB17-Ultra’s advanced engineering doesn’t stop there. A 295MHz Analog Devices DSP optimizes performance, ensuring tight, distortion-free low frequencies for both cinematic explosions and subtle musical details. Encased in a meticulously crafted MDF cabinet with internal bracing, it minimizes resonance while maintaining a compact, sealed design ideal for audiophiles seeking accuracy over sheer volume. Weighing a whopping 56.25Kg per piece, its build quality reflects SVS’s dedication to durability and sonic excellence.
Control is another standout feature. The subwoofer integrates with a sophisticated smartphone app, offering custom presets, parametric EQ, and auto room correction to tailor the sound to any space. Dual inputs and outputs, including balanced XLR connections, provide flexibility for home theater or hi-fi setups. A small full-color OLED screen on the subwoofer back panel displays real-time settings, adding a modern touch to its sleek aesthetic.
Priced as a premium offering, the SVS SB17-Ultra competes with subwoofers costing thousands more, yet it embodies SVS’s ethos of value-driven performance.
WHO’S THE BASS BOSS?
Patience my dear Watson, patience. Replacing the Lyngdorf BW-20 woofers with the SVS SB17-Ultra’s is not just swapping units. Nah, RoomPerfect needs a reset. With a 6.2.4 setup this means dancing the tango for about an hour with the measurement microphone through the listening room. It was obvious from the first low frequency test signal: these subs are something else.
I was rummaging through my playlists, looking for the track with the most bass impact and stumbled on Mad World with Fleurie and 2WEI. The first 15 seconds it drives ultra low rumbles into the room. My couch was literally shaking. I remember Peter Lyngdorf once saying to me: “You really can’t have enough bass”. I get it now. The shear level of ouput filled my heart with joy. The quality of the bass determines the end result. It was like an octave had been added to the low end. From 15 seconds on bass sweeps are added to the mix. These elevate the entire bass reproduction to the next level. When passing 2 minutes the track takes a nasty turn and builds up so much energy that you feel like you’re being overwhelmed by a tsunami. The SVS SB17-Ultra’s introduced so much power and dynamics that the soundstage remained rock solid, where before I usually felt like this part of the song was distorted as a result of poor mixing. A ear opener !
Now that we’re into covers … next I listened to Maria Mena’s version of the Kiss song ‘I was made for loving you’. I wanted to investigate whether the SVS SB17-Ultra’s could also be subtle, light-footed and fast when needed. The track starts with a spot-on bass guitar that picks notes with ease and excellent sense of rhythm. The subwoofers set the pace effortlessly. The bass guitar switches in a controlled manner from snappy and frivolous to more load and weight. A better foundation results in more vibrancy in the music reproduction. Tasty !
Heart is an instrumental track with a lof of nice guitar arrangements and deep bass of course. It’s a beautiful, compelling recording. Yeah, tap those feet on the rhythm of the bass ! It’s very impressive how the SVS SB17-Ultra’s can generate so much output while remaining strictly controlled. It’s like having the best of both worlds: having a lot of bass, while still hearing every detail and nuance. The rest of the frequency spectrum seems to be liberated by this, resulting in a more open and layered soundstage.
With Billie and ‘No time to die’ we are gradually moving towards some movie scenes. This 007 soundtrack is a masterpiece by Hans Zimmer. The build up and perfectly placed musical cues make this one of the best ‘Bond’ tracks of all time. And hey … it’s Billie right. Billie Eilish. From the start there are hints of low frequency rumble. You need the best subs to reproduce this in the right proportion. To little would make Billy sound exposed, to much bloated. The track really builds to a climax when passing the second minute. Low frequency energy starts to build up to a peak, to then disappear 15 seconds later. This part of the track defines the song. It makes or breaks it depending on the quality of the low frequencies. SVS succeeds with brio. You get the musical intent of Hans Zimmer, executed by Billy Eilish and the orchestral arrangements.
Let’s go big and dive in the epic fight scene of Gladiator II in the coliseum of Rome. The clashing of the swords is reproduced with excellent resolution. Flooding the arena to start a naval war seems a bit far fetched, especially when sharks start swiming around. The weight of the battle is very well rendered by the subwoofers. You get sucked into the action, become part of it. Every blow, thumb of whoosh is portrayed with so much realism. You can hear the bass. You can feel the bass.
Ready for another epic fight? It’s Venom versus his big, bad and ugly counterparts in the grand final. Helicopters are flying in, big guns firing, things exploding, monsters roaring … it’s action everywhere ! The whole room is filled with bass of excellent quality. It hits hard with the punch of sledgehammer. Fine details become exeptional when supported with that extra undertone. You can tap into an infinite supply of bass power. That’s just bad ass. Oh yeah, every music track and movie scene was evaluated in Dolby Atmos !
